20 Cumbias Sin Parar
$11.05 JEFE DE JEFES was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance.
When norteño fans are attempting to explain the polka-influenced style to those who know little or nothing about regional Mexican music, they compare it to everything from country to gangsta rap. The country comparison is made because of all the songs about heartache, loneliness, infidelity, and romantic disillusionment; the gangsta rap comparison is inspired by all the narco-corridos (corridos about drug trafficking) that los Tigres del Norte, Grupo Exterminador, the late Chalino Sanchez, and others are known for. And narco-corridos are a high priority on Jefe de Jefes (Boss of Bosses), which went down in history as one of the most essential Tigres albums of the '90s. This 1997 release (a two-CD set that sold over one million copies in the United States alone) was controversial; some Mexicans have accused narco-corridos of glorying the drug trade. But there is nothing on this album that paints drug trafficking in a favorable ...

| | Tropical Tribute To The Beatles CD (1996) With DVD
20 Cumbias Sin Parar
$15.05 On December 31, 1962, the Beatles performed the classic song "Besame Mucho" at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, in recognition of the highly emotive music from Latin America. Four decades later, RMM decided to bring the Beatles' greatest hits back, this time played by some of the most prominent Latin artists in a tropical tribute to one of the most influential acts in popular music ever. After the opening track, "Hey Jude," by Puerto Rican singer Tony Vega, Tito Nieves and the percussion virtuoso Tito Puente deliver a freewheeling "Let It Be." The Cuban soloist Guianko performs a salsa version of "Can't Buy Me Love," followed by Johnny Rivera's "Hard Day's Night." Latin diva Celia Cruz sings her own version of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," while New York-based Ray Sepúlveda and Manny Manuel do the same on "The Fool on the Hill" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," respectively. Domingo Quiñones' cover of "Day Tripper" is followed by "Lady Madonna" by Venezuelan-born Oscar D'Leon, and Jesus Enríquez joins Cuban Miles Peña on "With a Little Help From My Friends." RMM Tropical Tribute to the Beatles comes to an end with a stylish version of "Yesterday" by Cheo Feliciano (aka José Cheo Feliciano), a bolero-inflected "And I Love Her," and "Come Together" by Latin jazz symbol Tito Puente. A joyous 13-track record with captivating and even exuberant performances in both English and Spanish. ~ Drago Bonacich
This one-of-a-kind tribute celebrates TMM's 10th anniversary with ...
| | Essential Tony Bennett CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
20 Cumbias Sin Parar
$15.95 It's almost shocking to realize that before this collection's release, the career of musical legend Tony Bennett had been extensively anthologized only in box-set format and never by a career-spanning two-disc compilation. Upon inspection, it seems like the ultimate no-brainer--pick some of the mainly highlights from this vocal sensation's 50-year career, put them in chronological order, and let the magic happen.
Happen it does, as we're treated to gems from every phase of Bennett's oeuvre. Casual listeners may be surprised to learn that the '50s found Tony successfully reinventing Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" alongside more customary fare such as signature song "Rags to Riches." No one will be shocked at the very necessary inclusion of the '60s comeback smash "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but those who think of Bennett as an artifact belonging only to Sinatra's time will be educated by the subsequent material included here. From the sinuously jazzy "Steppin' Out with My Baby" to a moving take on the Elllington evergreen "Mood Indigo" and an album-closing duet with K.D. ...
