Despite its title, which would suggest a larger theme, Ten Little Monsters is a relatively straightforward collection of children's music that doesn't focus on monsters much beyond its title track. Songs such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Ring-A-Ring-A-Roses," and "Jack and Jill" share space with fun singalong material like "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea" and "Aiken Drum." The piano and gleeful children's voices that lead most arrangements do get tiresome after a bit, but since only one song breaks the three minute barrier, it's difficult for anything on Ten Little Monsters to become unbearable. The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The late Bill Evans was surely one of the finest jazz pianists ever. Few artists of any genre could match the level of quality-with-quantity of this legendary musician. Evans was not only the consummate jazz pianist, with incredible technique (classical pianist Glenn Gould admired him) and legendary lyricism, but a quiet innovator as well. There probably isn't a jazz pianist that values lyrical, swinging qualities that doesn't have a bit of Evans in him or her.
This nine-CD set collects all the recordings for the Fantasy label--a time period ranging from 1973 through 1978. The tracks feature Evans unaccompanied, in duo, trio and rarely-heard quintet formats, as well as the complete album he did in 1975 with Tony Bennet. This is a superb collection of some of the best piano jazz recorded not only in the '70s, but in the history of the music. Jazz fans and fans of good piano (any genre) should save up for this one.
