A MIXED BAG DONE WELL
Best known for her award winning work as the loopy, lushy, lasivious ofice manager on TV's "Will & Grace", Megan Mullally has been hiding a delightful set of pipes. Her voice is insideously appealing, creeping on you like a third glass of wine (an analogy her character might appreciate). Her choice of meterial is diverse at the least. A little country, a little lounge, a little rock and even a little traditional. All of Mullally's songs are "covers" (by original artists but reinterpreted by her here). It works quite well. It's a bit like going to a live night club performance where the artist does a variety of styles to appeal to the crowd. The best part of Mullally's "thing" is that voice. She works it hard in some numbers for effect but lets it just snuggle up to the melody and float along on others. It's hard to describe, but very appealing. Her finest moment comes with the last song, a delicious number by Tom Waits called "Take It With Me". She couldn't sound more unlike Tom...and that's good for this tune. She should think about doing more of his material...strong melody lines she uses beautifully. The back-up band and vocals are tight, clean and supportive. They add to, but don't overwhem her interesting combination of kick-ass and comfortably vulnerable vocal style. (One downer, it's a short 11 song offering)
