Porcupine Tree In Absentia Songs In Absentia Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Renewed my faith Dark yet beautiful soundscapes. Some guitar bits too "metal"-ish for this old progger. Loved some of the "Hackett"-ish guitar riffs. Unusual vocal harmonies correspond to dark feel of songs. I prefer a more mellow, melodic keyboard-oriented sound but have ordered I.E.M. and Blackfield to get a diverse feel for SW's talent. On this CD, check out Trains, The Sound of Muzak, Prodigal. | | Porcupine Tree Deadwing CD (2005)
In Absentia
$10.29 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodic changes give way to ambient passages, making it plain that this is no industrial-rock rip-off. "Arriving Somewhere ...
| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
In Absentia
$11.15 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on ...

In Absentia
$25.59 The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music.
The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety ("Kids," a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of "Let Love Be Your Energy," to songs that sound uncannily like IMAGINE-era John Lennon ("Better Man"). Best of all, however, is "Rock D.J.," a Cockney-rap track which sounds like modern day Ian Dury until it closes with a lift of the vocal breakdown from Sly Stone's ...

| | Joe Henry Tiny Voices CD (2003)
In Absentia
$11.85 On 2003's TINY VOICES, singer/songwriter Joe Henry sets about immersing the listener in a dreamy, anachronistic atmosphere that's both inviting and slightly foreboding. Continuing in the inventive, mood-driven vein that the Los Angeles-based troubadour established in earnest on 1996's TRAMPOLINE, Henry conjures up a woozy jazz vibe throughout much of this record, aided substantially by the agile contributions of reed man Don Byron and trumpeter Ron Miles. Although Henry downplays immediately catchy pop/rock melodies (a la "Trampoline" and "Stop" from past outings) in favor of creating an extended suite-like whole, there are plenty of fine moments to latch onto, particularly the slinky "Animal Skin" and the shuffling title track, which exemplifies Henry's knack for plaintive vocals and darkly romantic lyrics. With its lack of obvious "singles" or high-profile guests, TINY VOICES serves as a more subtle, though no less ...
