Pwei Product 86-94: The Pop Will Eat Itself Anthology CD

The first thing that hits you with Pop Will Eat Itself Anthology 1986-1994 is the packaging. A striking black sleeve emblazoned with the PWEI logo and the caption PWEI Product. The next is the choice of tracks. As the album title suggests this is a selection of tracks covering the full career of PWEI and includes some of their earlier releases, along all of their RCA single releases and beyond. The first CD covers the early years of PWEI prior to them signing to a major label. Many of these have long since been unobtainable, unless you're willing to spend a large wad of cash, and this perhaps makes the set worth having. It shows the bands progression from an essentially guitar driven indie style band to their experimentation with the use of samples and drum loops, and the style with which they are best known for. The second CD covers their RCA and Infectious (Nothing/Interscope in the US) single releases, along with some additional album tracks. Personally I feel that this is the weaker CD, may be if a few more remix tracks had been included then it would have packed a greater punch. Having said that though, it is still a great CD to listen to with the volume turned up. All in all though with the collection of tracks gathered here, it shows the bands progression and for those that have not heard any of their Chapter 22 releases then be surprised at what they sounded like.
