| Munich 1953 Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Stan Kenton at his best Excelant live performance includes Zoot sims Submitted by SDari2 (Bflo,NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A europeandelight One thing good about Stan Kenton is that he made a lot of records live and the results show. This band while containing a lot of outstanding musicians seemed to lack that extra punch especially in the high register trumpetwork.Conte Condoli has to bear the brunt of this, while a year or so earlier Maynard Ferguson added this excitement.and Condoli was assigned to what he does best, his great solo work.BUT it is definetely worth the money, June Christy sounds great. This was the leftover band, without the violens, from his expensive debt ridden INNOVATIONS orchestra, minus a few casulties. Not bad company with Condoli,Bob Burgess,Frank Rosolino, Bil Holman,Bill Russo,Lee Konitz Don Bagley, stan Levey, ZOOT Sims, and June Christy.to name a few. $16.49 Save for a major revamp of "Lullaby Of The Leaves," trombonist Conrad Herwig's fifth Criss Cross release, "Land Of The Shadows," is a program of originals performed by a hard-swinging sextet that features trumpeter Tim Hagans, tenor saxophonist Ben Schac
Personnel: Conrad Herwig (trombone); Ben Schachter (tenor saxophone); Tim Hagans (trumpet); David Kikoski (piano); James Genus (bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums). Recorded in Brooklyn, New York on May 28, 2002. Personnel: Conrad Herwig (trombone); Ben Schachter (tenor saxophone); Tim Hagans (trumpet); Dave Kikoski (piano); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums). Liner Note Author: Christopher Hovan. Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY (05/28/2002). Photographers: Gerry Teekens; Gildas Boclé. Conrad Herwig is a musician on a mission to bring trombone into the front rank of jazz horns. And over his two-decade long career he's succeeded admirably in demonstrating the horn's flexibility. Still, his playing sometimes seems weighted down by that sense of mission. At his best, as he is consistently on Land of Shadow, he lets it rip, with the trombone's natural voice, complete with its slight slurs and slides, coloring the relentless torrent of notes. Though, as on most of his sessions, this date is devoted to his own originals, Herwig opens with a high-powered take on the standard "Lullaby of Leaves," which sets the tone and ...
| | Jenny Scheinman 12 Songs CD (2005)
Munich 1953
$15.09 Personnel: Jenny Scheinman (violin); Jenny Scheinman; Ron Miles (cornet); Tim Luntzel (double bass); Bill Frisell (guitar); Rachelle Garniez (accordion, piano); Doug Wieselman (clarinet); Dan Rieser (drums). Audio Mixer: Sascha von Oertzen. Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY (12/13/2004/12/14/2004). No one can accuse violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman of promulgating any kind of jazz cliché, or even of fitting in especially well with the rest of the Cryptogramophone label's crew of off-kilter jazz experimentalists. Her obsession is with songs and with lyrics -- neither of which appear on this paradoxically titled album. The 12 compositions here aren't actually songs, but are meant to feel like songs, by which ...
