The feisty dance pop of the Sugababes returns in their second album ANGELES WITH DIRTY FACES.
One of the best pop albums of 2002 wasn't released in the U.S. If that's not dropping the ball, then what is? An assured and durable follow-up to 2001's formative One Touch, which still packed a number of singles that gave the group a great deal of success overseas, Angels With Dirty Faces is a thoroughly convincing amalgamation of the artists they've been weaned on -- from Madonna to TLC to Aaliyah -- with a strong foothold in contemporary trends. A bootleg mash-up of Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me" and Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric" led to the group's own spin on the trick, and it landed them the top spot on the U.K. chart. Using a beefed-up arrangement of Numan's robotic new-wave tune, the Sugababes lift Howard's forthright lyrics -- somewhat sheepishly, the "pump pump" that precedes "all through the night" is subsumed in the mix -- and weave the two elements together for a powerful and immensely catchy opening to the album. At no point during the remainder of the first half does the album lose steam. The verses of "Blue" are backed by jutting electronic beats that stutter and twist, while the chorus unwraps a tempo shift carrying an unexpectedly strummy quality. "Round Round," another hit that put the group on Top of the Pops, is something Garbage would no doubt love to have in their own catalog. Apart from a couple bum moments during the second half of the album -- see "Shape," a misguided re-configuration of Sting's "Shape of My Heart," replete with a literally patched-on appearance from the man himself -- this is a pop album that offers much more depth and excitement beyond the singles. ~ Andy Kellman
UK edition of the revamped dance-pop trio's sophomore album includes the first two hit singles, 'Freak Like Me' & 'Round Round' plus three exclusive bonus tracks, 'No Man No Cry', 'Breathe Easy' (Acoustic Jam) & 'Round Round' (Alternative Mix). Angels With Dirty Faces album
$14.75 One of the early feathers in the cap of the Bad Boy Entertainment empire, the female trio Total got their start backing the Notorious B.I.G. before releasing their self-titled debut in 1996. Unlike the sleek urban contemporary sound of acts like Destiny's Child, Total was driven by classic funk grooves and sassy attitude.
The singers, Kima, Keisha, and Pam, each have their own distinctive style, and that variety adds a pleasing twist to TOTAL. While the album isn't consistent throughout, it does have highlights, with "No One Else" and "Can't You See" (which features Biggie), among them. Funky, slinky, and sensual, TOTAL is a solid R&B album that deserves more attention than it's received since its release.
Recorded at The Hit Factory, Sound On Sound and Daddy's House Recording Studios, New York, New York; Jam Shack II Recording, Los Angeles and Pookie Labs, Sacramento, California; 3 Boyz From Newark Studios, Newark, New Jersey.

Angels With Dirty Faces CD music
$9.09 On their second album, '90s soul sistas JaKima Raynor, Keisha Spivey, and Pam Long sex up their lives, and everything around them, quite a bit. Turning their fairly standard take on the hip-hop girl group into a late-night bath of delight, they invite a who's-who roster into the tub with them (producers here include Missy Elliott, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Heavy D, among others). The best track, "Trippin'," is an Elliott-produced slice of robotic R&B that combines the gals' sweet harmonies with state-of-the-soul-art studio savvy. But the studio-powered Kima, Keisha & Pam ultimately loses its individuality while trying to be a part of the ...

Angels With Dirty Faces music CDs
$19.29 Disc 2 contains sax & guitar solos played during performances of '21st Century Schizoid Man'.
This compilation presents two very different views into the performance life of King Crimson. The first disc gathers live material from the 1971/1972 quartet, a majority of which was culled from the Live at Summit Studios, Live at Plymouth, 1971, and Live in Detroit, MI 1971 archival recordings. The second disc, subtitled "Schizoid Men," contains a single 54-minute rendering of "21st Century Schizoid Man" that consists of ten separate sax and guitar solos seamlessly combined together. These were taken from various performances throughout the 1971/1972 era -- although exact dates are conspicuously absent in the packaging. Although the track is indexed for easier access to the edits, there are no interruptions or fades from blow to blow.
Up until the late '90s, there was precious little in the way of legitimate live recordings featuring the combo of Boz Burrell (bass/vocals), Mel Collins (saxes/flute/mellotron), Ian Wallace (drums), and Robert Fripp (guitar/mellotron). Ladies of the Road provides something for both the casual enthusiast as well as the hardcore collector by gathering not only a generous sampling of prime moments from the archival releases, but also an intense and previously unearthed rendering of Donovan's "Get Thy Bearings" -- which had also been covered to great effect by the original 1969 incarnation of King Crimson. The origins of the highly stylized "Schizoid Men" disc can be traced back over a half-decade to the Schizoid Man, No. 2 (1996) EP, which included five independent recordings of the song. In addition to the original LP version and edit, there are three respective live observations by the 1969, 1972, and 1974 combos. Although the idea may seem a bit over the top, the execution is flawless. On this disc, the various solos -- all taken from shows during the 1972 North American tour -- are spliced together and present a frenetic improvisational masterpiece. This is done by providing a rare insight into the real-time evolutionary processes involved in perpetually reinventing "21st Century Schizoid Man" live on-stage night after night. The song has not only become King Crimson's signature composition, ...

Angels With Dirty Faces songs
$15.09 Pay attention to the dates in the title of The Best of Morphine 1992-1995. That chronological spread means it's not a career-spanning best-of, but only covers their early career, with nothing from their final albums for the DreamWorks label. That acknowledged, this is a decent overview of the first part of their discography, with most of the tracks hailing from their Good, Cure for Pain, and Yes albums (there's just one from B-Sides & Otherwise). For Morphine fans who have kept up with all those prior releases, the main ...
