| | Rod McKuen Greatest Hits Soundtrack CD - Import (1 Customer Review)
Over twenty of songwriter Rod McKuen's greatest hits available here on one CD. This Dutch import features songs from his award-winning career including "Champion Charlie Brown" and "Seasons in the Sun."
Oh my. This has to be the largest Rod McKuen's "greatest-hits" package ever assembled. No; it's not that he didn't have them. Who could forget the croaking glory of his voice in "I'll Catch the Sun," or his turgid collaboration with French Schlockmeister Francis Lai on "I Think of You"? But then there are his wonderfully honorable tunes, the ones he authored, such as his beautiful "Jean," "Cycles," and "Rock Gently," and his written collaboration with the late, great Léo Ferré on "About the Time." Oh yes; there are far more than that, and they are all here: all of the collaborative writing credits with Jacques Brel, such as "If You Go Away," "Seasons in the Sun," and "Amsterdam." There are 22 cuts in all. It could have been whittled down to perhaps 16 or 18 -- but then, too much is better than not enough. Recommended. ~ Thom Jurek

$11.99 Hollywood never learns. Hot on the heels of box-office failures Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Can't Stop the Music, comes the roller-skating Olivia Newton John in Xanadu. This soundtrack is fluff stuff to be sure, but some pearls float amongst the mire. Lead-off "Magic" remains a fine single. "Suddenly," a duet ONJ ekes out with British luminary Cliff Richard, seems better than most love themes. The sudden appearance ...

The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, marking them as a substantial artistic force. Composer Pete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases, but here his vision is spread over two ambitious records that play to the Who's main strengths. Anthems such as the raucous "Pinball Wizard" and the surprisingly serene "I'm Free" emphasize the kinetic power of the band, while Townshend's cast of characters (the perverted Uncle Ernie, the inscrutable Tommy) reveals a wild and unconventional imagination. Townshend even incorporates Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight to the Blind" as part of his fable about the "deaf, dumb, and blind kid," making a successful reference to the past in what is an undeniably groundbreaking and forward-looking achievement.

$6.49 If you don't have eclectic taste in music, soundtracks can present a problem. Sometimes a soundtrack will focus on one style of music exclusively, but most of the time, a director will use any types of music he/she finds useful -- regardless of genre. The director's job isn't catering to those who limit themselves to one genre of music -- it's selecting any music that enables him/her to tell the story well. So if a director finds that everything from heavy metal to R&B to adult contemporary helps him/her tell a story, you could end up with a very diverse soundtrack. To fully appreciate the soundtrack for the 1985 film Vision Quest, you need to appreciate a variety of music. Fans of arena rock and pop/rock will appreciate Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" (which goes back to 1978, and is the LP's oldest offering), Sammy Hagar's "I'll Fall in Love Again," and Red Rider's "Lunatic Fringe," while ...

The combination of the prolific Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is an ingenious one. He's set lush musical backgrounds to everything from comedies (I'LL DO ANYTHING), to period pieces (DRIVING MISS DAISY), to blockbuster war flicks (THE THIN RED LINE); she's one of the duo comprising Dead Can Dance, perhaps the most singular popularizers of ancient music of the '80s and '90s.
Zimmer and Gerrard contribute a thrilling, boisterous score. These stirring, magnificent pieces ...

$12.69 What others have to say..."Modesto, California's own Better Left Unsaid are one of those bands that, despite being unsigned, sound twice as good as half the bands out there right now that actually have a record deal. Their self-released full length, 'The Silencing', is an album that is simply chock full of quality Metal and some well-accomplished musicianship." Anthony | Loudside.com"Opening with the thunderous "Never Again" with its melodic chorus and true metal in between, this is a formula that works incredibly well for this band throughout this release. Next up is "Repletion," which is even heavier with more growl to the vocals, heavy breakdowns and an infectious chorus that stayed in my head for hours. This is definitely my favorite track off the album and would make a fantastic single with all its dynamic changes and overall heaviness ...
