Over twenty of songwriter Rod McKuen's greatest hits available here on one CD. This Dutch import features songs from his award-winning career including "Champion Charlie Brown" and "Seasons in the Sun."
Oh my. This has to be the largest Rod McKuen's "greatest-hits" package ever assembled. No; it's not that he didn't have them. Who could forget the croaking glory of his voice in "I'll Catch the Sun," or his turgid collaboration with French Schlockmeister Francis Lai on "I Think of You"? But then there are his wonderfully honorable tunes, the ones he authored, such as his beautiful "Jean," "Cycles," and "Rock Gently," and his written collaboration with the late, great Léo Ferré on "About the Time." Oh yes; there are far more than that, and they are all here: all of the collaborative writing credits with Jacques Brel, such as "If You Go Away," "Seasons in the Sun," and "Amsterdam." There are 22 cuts in all. It could have been whittled down to perhaps 16 or 18 -- but then, too much is better than not enough. Recommended. ~ Thom Jurek

If you don't have eclectic taste in music, soundtracks can present a problem. Sometimes a soundtrack will focus on one style of music exclusively, but most of the time, a director will use any types of music he/she finds useful -- regardless of genre. The director's job isn't catering to those who limit themselves to one genre of music -- it's selecting any music that enables him/her to tell the story well. So if a director finds that everything from heavy metal to R&B to adult contemporary helps him/her tell a story, you could end up with a very diverse soundtrack. It was only a matter of time before Guy Ritchie got around to actually setting one of his rock & roll gangster films in the world of rock & roll, and so we have Rock N Rolla, where it seems like Pete Doherty and Ari Gold have been dropped into the set of Snatch -- and the only way to date the picture is through its music, as Oasis has been swapped out for the Subways, which can either be read as a savvy update or a general indication of the degeneration of Ritchie and Brit-rock in general, turning from something that aspired to greatness and now settles for formula.
