| | Pulp Freaks CD Pulp Discography of CDs
The second Pulp album, 1986's FREAKS sees several changes from the band's debut of three years prior. The overall mood is much more sinister and aggressive (the album's subtitle is "Ten Songs about Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation, and Holding Hands."), alternately recalling such early Smiths tracks as "Suffer Little Children" and some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Carny."
FREAKS also finds main lyricist Jarvis Cocker handing over the vocal reins to guitarist Russell Senior on two particularly creepy songs. The first, "Fairground," opens the album with a swirling tale of a freak show, while the second, "Anorexic Beauty," is an ode to a distressingly thin woman ("Brittle hands and thin cigarettes, so hard to tell apart"). Elsewhere, "Being Followed Home" presents a story of stalking set against a carnival-esque musical backing. The music builds in intensity, playing over and over as the narrator's fear upon hearing the footsteps of a stranger increases. FREAKS is an altogether disquieting album that moved Pulp into the realms of the Goth movement.

Freaks album
$12.95 The first Pulp album, 1983's IT is slightly different from their later material. While many of lead crooner Jarvis Cocker's lyrical concerns are present--seedy sexual encounters, class distinctions, and the like--there are glimpses of hope and joy among the sordid details. This is most notable in "Love Love," a downright cheerful English music-hall number where Cocker proclaims, "I love love" against a sprightly backing track replete with trumpets.
Die-hard fans need not fear that this is a kinder, gentler version of Pulp, though. "Joking Aside" features Cocker intoning, "Yes, I'd like to turn you over, see what's on your other side, see if the problem's in my mind" in a manner reminiscent of Depeche Mode's Martin Gore at the latter's sleaziest. While the sound is not quite as musically dense and orchestral as it is on latter albums, a sense of claustrophobia dominates ...
| | Organ Grab That Gun CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Freaks CD music
$14.49 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette of droning organs, succinct drumming and sharp, upturned guitar lines that give new meaning to the term "hook." While this sound comes from the legacy of '80s college rock -- at times suggesting a fusion of the Smiths' witty, bouncy melancholy and the on-the-sleeve passion of Throwing Muses -- and also has ties to some of the other bands remaking new wave and post-punk in their own images, the Organ and Grab That Gun have a freshness that isn't often heard in any kind of rock music. ...

Freaks music CDs
$7.85 In the ongoing battle against the hegemony of the two guitars/bass/drums group configuration in rock & roll, Matson Jones at very least deserve credit for creating a unique alternative -- by replacing the guitars with cellos, they've come up with a variant that offers a broad range of tonal colors and sounds much more aggressive than you might expect. The Albatross Mates for Life, But Only After ...
