The second Pulp album, 1986's FREAKS sees several changes from the band's debut of three years prior. The overall mood is much more sinister and aggressive (the album's subtitle is "Ten Songs about Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation, and Holding Hands."), alternately recalling such early Smiths tracks as "Suffer Little Children" and some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Carny."
FREAKS also finds main lyricist Jarvis Cocker handing over the vocal reins to guitarist Russell Senior on two particularly creepy songs. The first, "Fairground," opens the album with a swirling tale of a freak show, while the second, "Anorexic Beauty," is an ode to a distressingly thin woman ("Brittle hands and thin cigarettes, so hard to tell apart"). Elsewhere, "Being Followed Home" presents a story of stalking set against a carnival-esque musical backing. The music builds in intensity, playing over and over as the narrator's fear upon hearing the footsteps of a stranger increases. FREAKS is an altogether disquieting album that moved Pulp into the realms of the Goth movement.
2002 reissue of 1986 album subtitled Ten Stories About Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation & Holding Hands. Simply awesome, ranging from Scott Walker balladeering to post-punk, avant-garde aggressiveness. Slipcase.
Recorded at Input Studios, Sheffield, England in June, 1986.
Pulp: Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, drums); Russell Senior (vocals, violin, guitar); Magnus Doyle (guitar, drums, percussion); Candida Doyle (piano, organ, background vocals); Peter Mansell (electric bass).

Freaks
$14.69 Pulp's third album, SEPARATIONS, was recorded in 1989 but not released until three years later. The record opens with a series of wails and a look forward to a future that "is shining like a giant metal beast, it shines so brightly, with its legs open wide." "Love is Blind" also features one of the first of lyricist Jarvis Cocker's spoken word asides, many of which seem to be highly personal tales of debauchery and degradation. The title track opens with a minute-long violin solo but launches into a string section before settling into a saga of loneliness driven by keyboards and rhythm. "Countdown," set to a near-disco beat, traces the social decline of the narrator.
"My Legendary Girlfriend," the first truly great Pulp single, is a mostly spoken-word, nearly seven-minute-long song featuring a "Shaft"-like guitar sound under Cocker's sweaty, sexually charged mumblings. The electro-fueled "This House is Condemned" wraps up the album with eight minutes of warped guitar, disjointed keyboards, and lyrics that address the mental breakdown ...
| | Pulp It CD (1983)
Freaks
$14.69 The first Pulp album, 1983's IT is slightly different from their later material. While many of lead crooner Jarvis Cocker's lyrical concerns are present--seedy sexual encounters, class distinctions, and the like--there are glimpses of hope and joy among the sordid details. This is most notable in "Love Love," a downright cheerful English music-hall number where Cocker proclaims, "I love love" against a sprightly backing track replete with trumpets.
Die-hard fans need not fear that this is a kinder, gentler version of Pulp, though. "Joking Aside" features Cocker intoning, "Yes, I'd like to turn you over, see what's on your other side, see if the problem's in my mind" in a manner reminiscent of Depeche Mode's Martin Gore at the latter's sleaziest. While the sound is not quite as musically dense and orchestral as it is on latter albums, a sense of claustrophobia dominates the proceedings in spite of the ...

Freaks
$12.25 Toronto-based electro noise squad Holy Fuck specialize in the kind of unholy racket worthy of their expletive-brandishing moniker. Finely honing their live electronics-aided lo-fi "motorik" for their second album, LP, the band wields overdriven Casiotones against steady-state beats set for oblivion. Upon an insistent, groove-heavy pulse that recalls the hypnotic propulsion of Krautrock outfits like Neu! and Harmonia, ...

| | Don Campbell Christmas CD (2002)
Freaks
$12.55 Maine native, singer-songwriter Don Campbell released a collection of 14 Christmas classics and 4 original holiday songs that has become a seasonal favorite with new and old fans alike. Campbell produced and arranged the album featuring signature fiddle and guitar sounds of the Don Campbell Band and added piano and cello instrumentation on the project, recorded in Portland, Maine over the summer and early fall of 2002.The making of “A Don Campbell Christmas” was motivated by fans and by a tradition. For over 10 years, Campbell has played music at the local Cerebral Palsy Center's annual Christmas party. “When my friend, Sue Brewer, a teacher at the CP Center, first approached me in 1990 about playing some Christmas music for this gathering, I had no idea what was in store or that this experience would become one of the biggest gifts I've ever been given. It's a joy to be a part of their annual celebration, and after so many years, it seemed like it was about time to record a Christmas music project!” said Campbell. Additionally, fans of Campbell's and the Don Campbell Band had been suggesting the same. In the fall of 2001, the Band surveyed fans to learn what their favorite Christmas classics were and what they'd like to hear on the CD. They received several hundred votes for a total of nearly 100 different Christmas song suggestions. The two biggest vote ...
