Mishap Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Lozenge Release Perfect Mix of Music, Noise and Mayhem I liked Chicago jazz-punk juggernaut Lozenge's first CD Doozy (2000, ToYo recs.) a lot. The sound of this experimental rock band is frikking amazing!! The leader Kyle Bruckmann plays electrified punk accordian! If that wasn't enough, he also contributes Kah-Razy Moog synth parts, screaming-rant vocals, and punk oboe (I told you it was amazing). The band has a great electric bassist in Kurt Johnson, and for the most phat 'n ugly rhythm section you'll ever hear-- both drummer Mark Stevens and a full-time "Metal Percussion" player, Philip Montoro.
On Mishap, Lozenge fans get both studio tracks, and urgent live cuts from a 2002 concert which featured a guest guitarist (Chuck Falzone?) and free-jazz saxophonist Boris Hauf. I found the CD to be the best mix of creative thrash-improv ever. The songs have a complex poly-rhythmic hook that grabs onto you like a drowning swimmer, and on that they build rich, detailed layers of pulsing noise and notes. The combination of crazy Moog, thrashy guitar, ranting alto sax with the monster bass/drum/metal rhythm section is brilliant, and you can't look away.
Now I just wish Lozenge would go on tour with guests like these, and maybe come to my small city in downstate Illinois!

| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Mishap
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive ...

| | Beatles Revolver CD (1966) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak; Enhanced CD
Mishap
$15.25 This reissue of REVOLVER has been digitally re-mastered. It comes packaged with replicated original U.K. album art, an expanded booklet containing original and newly written liner notes, and rare photos. Limited quantities of the CD are embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
Arguably the first psychedelic rock album, REVOLVER was praised for its musical experimentation--the Indian sounds of "Love You To," the Motown-inspired "Got To Get You Into My Life," the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping." "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the most radical departure from previous Beatles' recordings for its skeletal bass/drums propulsion enhanced only with tape loops (contributed by all four Beatles and added in the mix-down process), more backwards guitar, and an eerie ...

| | Janis Joplin Greatest Hits CD (1973)

Drawing inspiration from Bessie Smith and Odetta, Joplin developed a brash, uncompromising vocal style quite unlike accustomed folk madonnas. In 1966 Janis was invited to the Bay Area to front Big Brother And The Holding Company. Their CHEAP THRILLS, a joyous celebration of true psychedelic soul, contained ...

Mishap
$18.99 “You’d think I would have heard of somebody as good as Cousin Harley before this but this is my first encounter with his music and it couldn’t be more of a pleasure! …Top notch…a straight 10 out of 10.”Gaby Maag-Bristol“Blue Suede News” magazine, USACousin Harley is the rocking hillbilly persona of Paul Pigat, an extraordinary guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, Cousin Harley has a hard-earned reputation for delivering everything from hot rod rockabilly to foot stomping vintage country and western swing. Pigat’s Cousin Harley style is deeply rooted in the playing of Les Paul, Charlie Christian and Link Wray with a modern twist to create a style that is exhilarating in its intensity, yet at the same time fluid and precise. Paul’s creative use of tone and dynamics is a hallmark of everything he plays, and his sense of rhythm is both sophisticated and dead on.An extremely versatile artist, with projects ranging from delta blues to classical music, Hillbilly Madness is Pigat’s fifth Cousin Harley recording. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Neko Case, Michael Kaeshammer, and Carolyn Mark and has shared the stage with Taj Mahal, ...
