(1 Customer Review)
At the time of Mishap's release, Texans-turned-Chicagoans Lozenge had been making this kind of noise for ten years. This time around, they decided to release a live album. Lozenge plays caterwauling, free-range, experimental noise-core, and Mishap is full of chaotic, compelling, and sometimes compellingly abrasive explorations. The group's noise/metal/experimental compositions are spurred to life by oboe, Moog, accordion, tenor sax, guitar, and metal percussion, and their approach to improvisation can be as exhilarating as a free fall at times. "Bambam" is a collision between metallic clattering and bleating free jazz, while "Breaking the Chains" is almost linear at times, rumbling atop a pulsing bassline. The group also tackles the Birthday Party's "Big Jesus Trash Can." Lozenge is not for everyone, but those unhassled by radical improvisation and, well, noise will find Mishap a daring listen. ~ Erik Hage
Lozenge: Kyle Bruckmann (vocals, oboe, accordion, Moog synthesizer); Kurt Johnson (various instruments); Mark Stevens (drums); Phillip Montoro (percussion).
Additional personnel: Chuck Falzone (guitar); Boris Hauf (tenor saxophone).

| Mishap Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Lozenge Release Perfect Mix of Music, Noise and Mayhem I liked Chicago jazz-punk juggernaut Lozenge's first CD Doozy (2000, ToYo recs.) a lot. The sound of this experimental rock band is frikking amazing!! The leader Kyle Bruckmann plays electrified punk accordian! If that wasn't enough, he also contributes Kah-Razy Moog synth parts, screaming-rant vocals, and punk oboe (I told you it was amazing). The band has a great electric bassist in Kurt Johnson, and for the most phat 'n ugly rhythm section you'll ever hear-- both drummer Mark Stevens and a full-time "Metal Percussion" player, Philip Montoro.
On Mishap, Lozenge fans get both studio tracks, and urgent live cuts from a 2002 concert which featured a guest guitarist (Chuck Falzone?) and free-jazz saxophonist Boris Hauf. I found the CD to be the best mix of creative thrash-improv ever. The songs have a complex poly-rhythmic hook that grabs onto you like a drowning swimmer, and on that they build rich, detailed layers of pulsing noise and notes. The combination of crazy Moog, thrashy guitar, ranting alto sax with the monster bass/drum/metal rhythm section is brilliant, and you can't look away.
Now I just wish Lozenge would go on tour with guests like these, and maybe come to my small city in downstate Illinois!

Mishap album
$9.58 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That ...

Mishap songs
$10.39 Like the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise, GLEE became more than a TV show when several of its songs cracked the Hot 100, including the number four hit "Don't Stop Believing." That song kicks off this soundtrack, the first in a series of albums cataloging the music performed by the show's cast. Not all GLEE members are created equal--some cast mates are far better actors than singers--but this soundtrack has enough star power to keep things ...
| | Nirvana Bleach CD (1989) Deluxe; Deluxe Edition
Mishap album
$13.19 With a sludgy, chainsaw guitar sound that owes as much to early Black Sabbath as to Kurt Cobain's heroes The Melvins, whose drummer puts in an appearance here, Nirvana emerges from Seattle's underground scene as standard-bearers of a style that embraces the anger and energy of punk alongside the thick, muddy sonic attack favored by early '70s proto-metal bands. Cobain's lyrics are fueled by outrage and self-loathing, combining literary flair with a direct, visceral quality that makes him a viable candidate for the John-Lennon-of-Gen X award.
Nirvana's debut album showcases what sounds more like a force of nature than a rock band. The unrelenting fervor with which the group delivers these 13 tunes is almost frightening. There is also a strong melodic flair that leavens ...
| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Mishap CD music
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals ...
| | Janis Joplin Greatest Hits CD (1973)
Mishap music CDs
$6.25 GREATEST HITS spans the length of Janis Joplin's recording career, and features songs recorded with each of her three bands--Big Brother & The Holding Co., the Kozmic Blues Band, and the Full Tilt Boogie Band.
Originally released on Columbia (32168). Includes liner notes by Jaan Uhelszki.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York.
Drawing inspiration from Bessie Smith and Odetta, Joplin developed a brash, uncompromising vocal style quite unlike accustomed folk madonnas. In 1966 Janis was invited to the Bay Area to front Big Brother And The Holding Company. Their CHEAP THRILLS, a joyous celebration of true psychedelic soul, contained two Joplin 'standards', "Piece Of My Heart" and "Ball And Chain", but she left the group in November 1968. Electric Flag members Mike Bloomfield, Harvey Brooks and Nick Gravenites helped assemble a new act, known as the Kozmic Blues Band. I Got Dem Ol' KOZMIC BLUES Again Mama was coolly received, but the set contained several excellent Joplin vocals, notably "Try," "Maybe" and "Little Girl Blue". The singer subsequently dissolved the band and undertook medical advice for drink/drug abuse. A slimmed-down group, the Full Tilt Boogie ...
| | Deep Dish Global Underground: Moscow CDs (2001)
Mishap songs
$21.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Deep Dish.
"Thank You (Deep Dish Vocal Remix)" won the 2002 Grammy Award For Best Remixed Recording.
Incredibly nocturnal and hypnotic, propelled from the beginning of the first set to the end of the second with gigantic basslines and murky vocal dubs, Deep Dish's debut mix for the long-running Global Underground series is absolutely enveloping. It submerses you with its weight and its darkness as well as its numbing sense of bliss. Where much of progressive house around the time of this album's release in late 2001 had become too melancholic and weighed down for its own good, feeling more like a come-down than a sensual rush, Dubfire and Sharam don't fall victim to these tendencies on Global Underground: Moscow like they had a few months earlier on their lumbering Yoshiesque, Vol. 2 mix. First of all, they drop plenty of vocal tracks. These aren't your traditional vocal house tracks, but rather the sort of vocal dubs that bury the often muted and stoned-sounding vocals in the music rather than overwhelm you with singsong excess. Secondly, they drop the right tracks at the right times, namely surefire tracks like their own remixes of Dido's "Thank You" and iio's "Rapture" along with other similar tracks like Sander Kleinenberg's remix of PMT's "Deeper Water" and 16b's remix of John ...
