An instant Holiday favorite upon its release in 1988, it's now one of the most sought after Christmas albums, since it's been out of print for years. The album includes 5 songs penned by Jam & Lewis, plus 4 standards and Danny Hathaway's classic 'This Christmas'. 24-bit digitally remastered. Tabu Records. 2002.
Personnel: Alexander O'Neal (vocals); Jellybean Johnson (guitar, percussion); Dave Agent (guitar); Thomas McElroy, Denzil Foster (keyboards, programming); Lisa Keith, Randy Ran (background vocals). Producers: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Denzil Foster, Thomas McElroy, Steve Hodge. Recorded at Starlight Studio, Richmond, Virginia; Flyte Tyme Productions and MPR Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Holiday records were a staple of the Motown, Atlantic, and Stax release schedules during the golden age of soul music, but in the 1980s few R&B acts picked up the baton. Although it hasn't dated particularly well, My Gift to You nevertheless remains an admirable and energetic attempt to revive the Christmas album concept for a new generation, pairing Alexander O'Neal with the hitmaking production duo of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to create a lushly romantic set considerably more thoughtful and heartfelt than your average yuletide cash-in. Half of the album's ten songs are Jam/Lewis originals, and even if none of them emerged as contemporary standards, they do a good job of capturing both the secular ("Our First Christmas") and spiritual ("Remember Why It's Christmas") dimensions of the season. O'Neal also delivers shopworn material like "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Winter Wonderland" with conviction, saving his most potent performance for the Donny Hathaway classic "This Christmas." There's no getting around the trademark Jam/Lewis production, though. My Gift to You is plainly a product of its era, complete with thick synthesizers and programmed rhythms, and is best enjoyed by listeners still hoping Santa brings them acid-washed jeans and Members Only jackets regardless of the year in question. ~ Jason Ankeny

Fantastic This is my second copy of My Gift To You by Alexander O'Neal. I purchased it as soon as it was released because I loved Alexander O'Neal's sound. After my first copy wasn't returned, I had asked some friends who D.J. if they knew where I could obtain a copy and they told me good luck it was out of production or reproduction. This is an excellent R&B Christmas CD. I love all the songs but My Gift to You, Our First Christmas, I Want To Thank You all original Christmas music that will become Christmas classics. My Gift To You
$14.49 Personnel: Tracy Lee Nelson, Oliver Brown (vocals). Audio Mixers: Rick Rock; John Frye; Rich Keller; Soopafly; Leslie Brathwaite; Dave Aaron. Recording information: Chalics Studios, Hollywood, CA; Fly's Spot; Patchwek Studios, Atlanta, GA; The Cathedral, Hollywood, CA; The Country, Diamond Bar, CA; The Irvine Studios, Irvine, CA. Long departed for lucrative solo careers, Snoop Dogg's protégé duo of Daz Dillinger and Kurupt, better known as Tha Dogg Pound, reunite for CALI IZ ACTIVE, the duo's first official album since their sophomore effort, 2002. Crossing up their long-held West Coast style with technically superior production by Swizz Beats, Southern crunk courtesy of David Banner and Jazze Pha, and many more high-profile guest shots, CALI IZ ACTIVE serves as a wake-up call for California, in particular Long Beach County, to resume the throne as holders of the country's most dominant rap sound--G Funk. The funk reigns supreme on tracks like "Hard on a Hoe," but finds new life in sped-up, crunked out tracks like "It's Craccin' All Night" and "Sittin' on 23'z." With its crooked, crooked West Coast beat and the glorious TGIF chorus thrown on top of it, lead single "Cali Iz Active" came on the scene and ruled every beatbox that knew what was up. But just like the cover artwork to the album Cali Iz Active, the wicked title cut misrepresents what is really a reunion of the original Dogg Pound duo, Daz Dillinger and Kurupt, with only a couple ...

My Gift To You
$14.29 Photographer: Jeremy Cowart. Prolific folk-pop singer-songwriter David Wilcox returns with OPEN HAND, a typically mellow, low-key collection of acoustic songs embellished with gentle soft-rock keyboards and other subtle accompaniments. Wilcox's warm, lived-in voice and supple guitar work remain front and center throughout. Highlights include the wry "Modern World," a song demanding the flying cars and utopian peace that had been promised to the children of the baby boom as they were growing up, and the even more sardonic superhero parody "Captain Wanker."
The Who, What, Where, When:David Wilcoxâs âOpen Handâ was recorded in 7 days from start to finish in December 2008 on 2 inch 16 track analog tape. No computer tricks were used, all of the songs on this release were recorded live, just 4 human beings playing music together. Very minimal overdubs were used, so most all of what you hear is exactly as it was played together by David and the other musicians live. Dan Phelps produced and played guitar and keyboard, Jon Evans: bass guitar and upright bass, James McAlister: drums and percussion.âOpen Handâ is Davidâs 16th release. Since he performs solo acoustic almost exclusively, he is able avoid the common 8 or 10 week tour, preferring instead to strike a balance between traveling for shows and being at home in Asheville NC with his family. Itâs more than just a good balance for his life, he compares the two worlds of touring and creativity at home as being akin to the in breath and the out breath - inspiration and expression. The Why:David loves music for how it has tuned up his life. More than just entertainment, music has been a compass to navigate a life worth singing about. Some people describe the effect of what David does as if he were a mystic or a healer. So here are three different views from Gary Jules, Elizabeth Lesser, and Brian MacLaren of what David does with this simple sound. First, Gary Jules describes the effect of Davidâs musicianship.Gary Jules writes:For most of us who are referred to as âsinger-songwritersâ, there is more to a good song than just words, music, and performance. Each is beyond important of course but, to pummel the clichĂ© yet again, we want the whole (song) to be greater than the sum of its parts (words, music, and performance). With really good singer-songwriters, these three elements become akin almost to the three dimensions of the physical world ...
