Christy Baron's third CD for Chesky is promoted by liner note writer David Finck (who plays bass and wrote two of the originals on this session) as featuring a singer who is a "true communicator." While she is a pleasant singer, she fits more into pop (or AAA, for those who classify by radio terminology) than into jazz. The excessive reliance on empty pop songs, especially the three bland works by Carole King and the friendly but banal "Happy Together" (a huge hit for the Turtles in the 1960s) make this disc of minimal interest to serious jazz fans. There are some successful detours into standards and jazz compositions, including "That Old Devil Moon" and "You Are There" (co-composed by the great Johnny Mandel and the underrated Dave Frishberg). Even though the supporting cast provides more than ample support, the CD doesn't stand up to singers who make jazz their forte rather than a sideline. ~ Ken Dryden

This sweet-voiced, independent, adult contemporary artist is aiming for a mix of Diana Krall's deep sensuality and Sade's lighthearted seduction, with a slight tip of the cap to Astrud Gilberto. Hardly a powerhouse, but sweetly endearing all the same, her high and gentle vocal approach finds her tackling standards in both a gentle, smooth jazz way ("Anyone Who Had a Heart") and also with a Brazilian lilt ("Walk on By"). The latter tune has a pleasant lead vocal but is most memorable for its gentle samba guitar line by Wayne Johnson and Hubert Laws' twirling flute solo. Aside from going down easy, Duboc's chances for success in the genre are helped by numerous smooth jazz elite like saxman Gerald Albright and keyboardist Jeff Lorber. Also impressive are her songwriting skills, although perhaps she shouldn't be so obvious about her ambitions to compete with Sade (one of her songs is "This Is No Ordinary Love"). This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
This isn't Sutton's tribute to Sinatra, although all the material here was recorded and made famous by him. Instead, it's her working through the nooks and crannies of his songbook, and bringing things out and putting her own particular polish on them. It could be something with strings, such as "What'll I Do?" or the intimacy of "I'll Be Around," which is as much a plea as a reassurance and resignation. Her version of "I Think of You," whose melody comes originally from Rachmaninov, is gloriously subtle, the emotion as softly drawn out as the syllables. "I Could Have Told You" offers comfort and a shoulder to cry on, a gentle embrace that's almost a whisper in Sutton's hands. The music here is at its best when the orchestra keeps away -- they simply become overkill, the too-sweet icing on ...
