| | Alice Cooper Welcome To My Nightmare CD (1975)
Absurd-Ditties
$7.29 In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title explains the subject matter--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Now on his own and in total control, Cooper was able to explore rock theatrics in a way that was impossible in his band. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era.
"Cold Ethyl" is a disturbing little ditty about necrophilia. The soft, melodic "Only Women Bleed" became a surprise smash for Alice, and there's a low-key feel as well on the chilling "Steven." The somewhat funky title track works as a kind of theme song, while Cooper's expected heavy metal tendencies are explored on "The Black Widow." Most of Lou Reed's band joined Cooper for this record. Guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, as well as bassist Prakash John do a superb job of replicating the excitement of the original band.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (Digiprep).

| | Misfits Walk Among Us CD (1982)
Absurd-Ditties
$9.19 If the Misfits were one of the greatest punk bands then WALK AMONG US s perhaps one of the greatest records in punk history. While STATIC AGE and EARTH A.D. showcased a band searching for an identity like a vampire for its next victim, WALK AMONG US is almost sheer perfection. With a solidified lineup, fully grown-out devillocks (the Misfits trademark long spike of hair in the front) and the stabilizing presence of the somewhat pedestrian but agile Arthur Googy on drums, uber-Misfit Glenn Danzig was finally able to match his zombie-Elvis to a worthy musical foil.
From the manic opening of "20 Eyes" to the monster football chorus of "Braineaters," there is nothing less than a sublime moment on this album from start to finish. "Astro Zombies" or "I Turned Into a Martian" sound like songs to raise the dead by. A special bonus is perhaps the tenderest love song to decapitation ("Skulls") in recent memory. Finally ...
| | Best Of Pantera: Far Beyond The Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits! CD (2003)
Absurd-Ditties
$10.85 With its pioneering "power groove" sound, Pantera leapt onto the metal scene of 1990 with the landmark album COWBOYS FROM HELL. The Texan band distinguished itself by offering up a potent mid-tempo version of the typically fast-paced thrash metal style, resulting in a dense, crushing sound that served as a solid foundation for Phil Anselmo's dynamic growl-to-a-falsetto-in-seconds-flat voice.
Although this collection only features five tracks from the early-'90s one-two punch of COWBOYS FROM HELL and VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER, it serves as a good introduction to the band's overall output. Pantera's career from the mid-'90s onward is represented ...
| | Head Automatica Decadence CD (2004)
Absurd-Ditties
$10.39 Although Glassjaw's Daryl Palumbo could have stuck to his nu-metal guns while teaming up with dance/electronica producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura, the vocalist uses DECADENCE as a conduit for Rapture-worthy grooves with a rock & roll swagger. Among the more booty-shaking Head Automatica creations are the Primal Scream-like "Brooklyn Is Burning," with its mix of big beats and pumped-up riffage, and "Please Please Please (Young Hollywood)," a bass-driven rant with ...

| | Jerry Lee Lewis 18 Original Sun Greatest Hits CD (1984)
Absurd-Ditties
$9.05 As any rock critic worth her salt will tell you, rock and roll is supposed to be dangerous, wild, just beyond the pale of respectability. True rock and roll, in other words, emanates from the legacy of Jerry Lee Lewis, rock's first incorrigible punk. Jerry Lee lived the ...

| | M83 Before The Dawn Heals Us CD (2005)
Absurd-Ditties
$9.79 There are moments of drifting bliss, of course, on the Brian Eno-esque "I Guess I'm Floating," and "Farewell/Goodbye," a breathy electronic ballad with vocals from Lisa Papineau. Yet the shoegazer-meets-New Wave track "Don't Save Us from the Flames" could be an indie-pop single, with its sinuous verses and crashing, wall-of-sound choruses, and "Teen Angst" is an blast of up-tempo euphoria. Gonzalez still takes plenty of moody turns, particularly on the piano-led "Safe," which could fit on Pink Floyd's THE WALL, and "Car Chase Terror," a tension-filled soundtrack for an imaginary film. These varied styles fit together nicely on BEFORE THE DAWN ...

| | George Duke I Love The Blues, She Heard My Cry CD (1975) Remastered; Digipak
Absurd-Ditties
$9.65 George Duke has always been a musician who refused to limit himself to one style. Prior to I LOVE THE BLUES, which came out in 1975, Duke excelled in contexts both acoustic and electric, in straight-ahead jazz, arty rock (with Frank Zappa), and fusion. BLUES finds him fronting an all-star lineup (Lee Ritenour, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Flora Purim) in a set of fierce blues, soul/R&B, and rock songs (lead vocals by Duke) amid some nifty jazz-fusion instrumentals. This set is recommended ...
