Imagine a wild assortment of '60s incidental soundtrack music thrown into a stew, then played back again on somewhat more modern equipment. That's what Marden Hill did on their 1988 album Cadaquez, several years ahead of when such lounge/jazz/Morricone/surf blends started to come back into fashion. You can tick off numerous reference points as the songs fly by: ominous cool jazz spy movie themes ("Masque"), suave Euro jet set crooning ("Oh Constance"), jump'n'jive ("Robe"), the Shadows ("Anthem"), early-'60s surf stomp ("Bacchus Is Back," "Satellite"), Ennio Morricone spaghetti westerns ("The Execution of Emperor Maximillian," a very close mimic complete with gladiator chant scatting and black mass organ), after-hours cabaret ("Bar Room Fly"). It's presented as impeccably as a newly pressed suit, though the consummate skill and taste is more calculated than soulful. It must say something about the cycle of popular culture when such an avowedly retro album is itself reissued less than 15 years after its original appearance. ~ Richie Unterberger
El records is delighted to announce the re-issue of their most important original classics, 'Cadaquez' by Marden Hill is now available on compact disc and highly desirable digi-pack format for the first time. In the wake of Marden Hill followed the James Taylor Quartet, Combustible Edison and ultimately Austin Powers for whose films they really should have written the soundtrack.
Personnel: Guy Evans (drums).
Liner Note Author: Vermont.

Cadaquez album
$13.49 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, ...
| | Robin Thicke Sex Therapy: The Experience CD (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition
Cadaquez CD music
$15.95 Sex Therapy is an evasive maneuver to prevent Robin Thicke from being pigeonholed as a "grown folks" R&B singer. It's evident that hits -- more specifically, appealing to younger listeners -- is the goal. While Thicke's previous album, Something Else, did well on the album charts, it maintained a classicist sound throughout, produced only one major single, and featured only one appearance from a guest MC. Sex Therapy, however, enlists Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, the Game, Kid Cudi, and Nicki "Stick shift the ding-a-ling" Minaj -- not to mention Estelle and Jazmine Sullivan, both of whom contribute excellent background vocals on their respective appearances. Thicke heightens the brashness downplayed on Something Else, best applied on the title track, where the cunning contrast between his masculine certitude and feather-light falsetto is in full effect. That he does it while lifting the melody from "It's My Party" -- as a near-replication of the pulse from the Art of Noise's "Moments in Love" drifts in the background ...
| | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Cadaquez music CDs
$13.49 After his aborted, Internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 Play: 4th Quarter, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyoncé, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves ensured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 Play, Untitled, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto-Tune-laden crowd-pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely uptempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One"). ~ Andy Kellman

| | Madlib Miles Away: The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble CD (2010)
Cadaquez CD music
$13.74 Miles Away is the second offering from Madlib's Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble. The first, Summer Suite, was only available in limited quantities in Japan. The title here is an obvious nod to Miles Davis, but it's only a nod. Each of these ten tracks is dedicated to a jazz artist -- but Miles isn't among them. The sources are less obvious except to hardcore fans of '70s jazz as it met soul, funk, African rhythms, and Middle Eastern and Indo-Asian sounds. The heavy percussion and drum mantra that opens the set on "Derf" (for Derf Reklaw) is the first of many shape-shifting identities this music brings to the listener. It evolves within a minute into a soulful, mantra-like spiritual jazz tome for flute, piano, and imaginative drum and percussion interplay. "Waltz for Woody" (for Woody Shaw) uses the late trumpeter's sense of modally oriented post-bop as a kickoff with rumbling basses, shimmering cymbals and snares, the sounds of steel drums, spacious darkly tinged pianos, and plenty of reverb ...
