Imagine a wild assortment of '60s incidental soundtrack music thrown into a stew, then played back again on somewhat more modern equipment. That's what Marden Hill did on their 1988 album Cadaquez, several years ahead of when such lounge/jazz/Morricone/surf blends started to come back into fashion. You can tick off numerous reference points as the songs fly by: ominous cool jazz spy movie themes ("Masque"), suave Euro jet set crooning ("Oh Constance"), jump'n'jive ("Robe"), the Shadows ("Anthem"), early-'60s surf stomp ("Bacchus Is Back," "Satellite"), Ennio Morricone spaghetti westerns ("The Execution of Emperor Maximillian," a very close mimic complete with gladiator chant scatting and black mass organ), after-hours cabaret ("Bar Room Fly"). It's presented as impeccably as a newly pressed suit, though the consummate skill and taste is more calculated than soulful. It must say something about the cycle of popular culture when such an avowedly retro album is itself reissued less than 15 years after its original appearance. ~ Richie Unterberger
El records is delighted to announce the re-issue of their most important original classics, 'Cadaquez' by Marden Hill is now available on compact disc and highly desirable digi-pack format for the first time. In the wake of Marden Hill followed the James Taylor Quartet, Combustible Edison and ultimately Austin Powers for whose films they really should have written the soundtrack.
Personnel: Guy Evans (drums).

Cadaquez album
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, and its catchy choruses, rollicking beats, and memorable vocal performances won't disappoint.

| | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Cadaquez CD music
$11.18 After his aborted, Internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 Play: 4th Quarter, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyoncé, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves ensured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 Play, Untitled, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto-Tune-laden crowd-pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely uptempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One"). ~ Andy Kellman

| | Boyz II Men Love CD (2009)
Cadaquez songs
$12.89 The title of Boyz II Men's third consecutive covers album is only partially indicative. The love songs covered on this disc span several decades and styles, unlike Throwback (`70s and early-`80s funk and soul) and Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA (self-explanatory), both of which were more focused thematically. What ties these songs together is that they are love songs, and nothing else. That early-`60s R&B (Sam Cooke's "Cupid"), late-`90s country (Lonestar's "Amazed"), and early-`80s rock (Journey's "Open Arms," a choice likely influenced by producer Randy Jackson) are all part of the mix only hints at the randomness of the selections. Despite the range of the sources, Boyz II Men tie it all together. ~ Andy Kellman

| | Marian McPartland Live At Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 9 CD (1991)
Cadaquez music CDs
$9.79 Marian McPartland has become a jazz legend over several decades and this captivating solo concert has something for everyone. Whether it's her jaunty opener "This Time the Dream's On Me," the deliberate somber take of "Willow Weep for Me," or her thunderous performance of her "Theme From Piano Jazz" (usually heard only as an incomplete snippet on her long-running NPR series), her chops are never in question. A highlight is Duke Ellington's "Clothed Woman," a piece rarely performed even by its composer. McPartland slowly unveils its shrouds, gliding through a maze of dramatic chords, joyous stride piano and repetitious vamps with a veteran's confidence (she played it ...

Cadaquez music CDs
$14.65 Hardcore hip-hop quartet the Outlawz have never compromised their sound in the interest of crossover pop success. From the beginning, they've pursued a straight-ahead gangsta style that accurately represented the gritty reality of life on the mean streets. Their second album NOVAKANE is no exception. The forceful, urgent vocal delivery, firm, unrelenting thud of the beats, and detail-oriented, unremittingly grim lyrical outlook are all crucial elements of the Outlawz sound, and are all in full effect here. Though they do occasionally pause to express their regret over the pursuit of the thug life and their longing for a life beyond the violence, these heavy-duty rappers generally immerse themselves head-to-toe ...
