Initial pressings of this first edition contain a bonus disc.
Recorded between 1970 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Paul Gambaccini.
Greatest Hits 1970-2002 is a nearly flawless double-disc set commemorating Elton John's three-decade career. Disc one features what may arguably be John's most essential work: Seeing songs such as "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle in the Wind," and "Bennie and the Jets" -- not to mention "Your Song," "Rocket Man," and "Tiny Dancer" -- lined up back to back reaffirms just how diverse, and yet universal, his songwriting talent is. Disc two finds this talent maturing gracefully into the '80s, '90s, and beyond, touching on pop gems like "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," "I'm Still Standing," and "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" as well as his Lion King classic "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" and the Aida duet "Written in the Stars" with LeAnn Rimes. The collection also finds room for the highlights of his most recent albums, including Made in England's "Believe" and "Blessed," The Big Picture's "Something About the Way You Look Tonight," and Songs from the West Coast's "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore." For most casual fans, Greatest Hits 1970-2002 will replace the need for collections such as Greatest Hits, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, and Greatest Hits, Vol. 3, although these collections are still worthwhile as of-their-time retrospectives of John's work. ~ Heather Phares

One Night Only: The Greatest Hits Live Music Review
Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All 21 Reviews Life-time Elton John fan Have been listening Elton John since I can remember, and this is the best of the best! Did not care for the bonus CD, but you can't go wrong with the other two. Had to add this to my Elton John collection. A must for all EJ fans. Nice memories This CD brings back memories of seeing Elton in concert back in the 70's and 80's. If you are a Elton John fan it is a must for your collection. Submitted by a reviewer (High Point NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 7 of 11 found this helpful.
Brings back years of memories If your life didn't parallel the hits of Elton John over the past 32 years then you won't appreciate the evolution of the music and the man. It has to be an experience where you can remember where you were when his songs played. If you are a newer Elton John fan and want to see where he's come from, give it a try! Still Standing! By reading the titles that are included on these discs, you know that you can't go wrong with this purchase. Most of the major hits are here with disc-1 being dedicated to the 70's blockbusters. The only downside to owning any greatest hits compilation is that you lose some of the feeling of context of the album in which the music was written for. That being said, this is a good one to own. A good review of Elton's career, even if it does have holes This album captures the highest moments of Elton John's career, by taking his biggest hits and putting them on two discs. The end result is striking. Elton wrote such diversified stuff that you really couldn't peg him down into a specific genre. Singer-songwriter? "Your Song". Rocker? "I'm Still Standing". Honky-tonk pianist? "Honky Cat". Pop mogul? "Rocket Man" and "Crocodile Rock". Elaborate showman? "Levon" and "Tiny Dancer". Name almost any popular genre. It's probably here, represented somehow. This collection shows how powerful Elton's songs are, and how they all stand on their own merits. Those who never got into Elton John before should buy this album. The music will let them know what they have missed. Submitted by Galen (Anchorage, AK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
