| | Big Al Carson Take Your Drunken Ass Home CD (2002)
Funky House Party CD music
$14.09 Everyone has thought it on occasion, when a drunk spoils the party for everyone else, and now Big Al Carson has written a song that expresses what everyone was thinking. "Take Your Drunken Ass Home" was written by Carson extemporaneously one night, as the blues musician and his band were repeatedly interrupted during their set by an inebriated patron at a New Orleans bar. Since then, the song has become a favorite during the Carnival season, culminating in its biggest day, Mardi Gras, with plenty of people needing this kind of advice. Music veteran Carson has chosen the humorous tune as the title cut of his 2002 CD release. Playing a regular gig for years at the Funky Pirate Bar on Bourbon Street, Big Al Carson has seen quite a few patrons like the one who inspired this song. It is just like the good-natured singer to take it all in stride by making an entertaining song out of the situation: crowd control big easy-style. Some other songs on the album reflect the New Orleans party spirit as well. The recording opens with "Because I Got High," followed by the Muddy Waters tune "Champagne & Reefer." There are sexy renditions of "Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On" and "Dip My Dipper." If there was ever anyone meant to sing Willie Dixon's "Built for Comfort," it is Big Al Carson. The man of the large girth and matching smile entices the ...

Funky House Party music CDs
$13.25 Document's Alabama: Black Country Dance Bands (1924-1949) collects the recorded work of Mississippi Sarah and Daddy Stovepipe, Bogus Blind Ben Covington, and the Mobile Strugglers, together constituting a mixed bag of primarily vaudeville and dance-oriented pieces. While Daddy Stovepipe's four recordings for the Gennett label, made in 1924 and 1927, are relatively uninteresting and characterized by bad sound quality. His later eight sides with wife Mississippi Sarah are among the best jug band breakdowns on record, encompassing themes from the Bible to the Depression in consistently magnificent style. In "Burleskin' Blues" and the glorious "The Spasm," Sarah and Stovepipe are at their liveliest, funniest, and raunchiest, swapping insults and threats, Stovepipe rapping his rhymes against the pounding rhythm of his wife's jug, and Sarah wailing her blues to her husband's screaming harmonica. Bogus Blind Ben Covington ("Bogus" because he wasn't actually blind) was probably a pseudonym for Ben Curry, a banjo player and medicine show entertainer whose repertoire consisted of such comic pieces as "I Heard the Voice of a Pork Chop." His performances are typically less captivating than those of Mississippi Sarah and Daddy Stovepipe, but are at times very amusing and always valuable as provocative glimpses into the songster tradition. The two tracks by the Mobile Strugglers, ...

| | Dave Carter When I Go CD (1998)
Funky House Party album
$14.29 Modern folk duo guitarist Dave Carter and violinist Tracy Grammer first paired up on this 1998 release, When I Go. Apparent from the start is the pair's sensitive interplay and pristine sound. While a bit thinner-sounding than Tanglewood Tree, the album is no less charming, featuring Carter's signature enigmatic tales of rural life and Grammer's yearning violin sound. Re-released in 2002. ~ Matt Collar

| | Gov't Mule Deep End, Vol. 2 CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Funky House Party CD music
$7.85 Disc 2 is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks as well as multimedia computer files.
Additional personnel includes: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); James Hetfield, John Scofield, Gary Lucas (guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Danny Louis, John Medeski (Wurlitzer piano, organ); Rob Barraco, Pete Sears (piano); Johnny Neel, Chuck Leavell, Art Neville, Bernie Worell (organ); Me'Shell N'Degeocello, Rocco Prestia, Jack Casady, Tony Levin, George Porter, Jr., Chris Squire, Phil Lesh, Jason Newsted, Billy Cox, Dave Schools (bass); Alphonso Johnson (electric upright bass).
Originally conceived as a tribute to Gov't Mule bassist Allen Woody, the second portion of this ambitious project continues to feature some of the biggest names in the music industry filling in for the late musician. Much like its predecessor, THE DEEP END, VOL.2 finds founding members Warren Haynes and Matt Abts digging deep into their collective Rolodexes to enlist a dizzying range of musicians to sit in on this mix of original material and covers. Notable performances include Tower Of Power's Francis Rocco Prestia holding down the bottom on a chugging cover of his group's smash "What Is Hip?" and Alphonso Johnson using an electric stand-up bass to lead a quartet through the tasty jazz original "Babylon Turnpike."
Throughout, Haynes' gruff vocals and screaming, crying guitar serve as this project's glue. He shines whether he's joining Me'Shell NdegeOcello and John Medeski on a low-key stroll through the languid "Hammer And Nails" or joining forces with co-writer/keyboardist Johnny Neel and Yes bassist Chris Squire on the prog-like instrumental majesty of "Sun Dance." Best of all is "Lay Of The Sunflower," a Haynes/Robert Hunter composition featuring erstwhile Grateful Dead bassman Phil Lesh and mandolin master David Grisman.
