Ruth Copeland's GIMME SHELTER: THE INVICTUS SESSIONS features 16 funktastic classics including "I Got a Thing for You Daddy" and "Suburban Family Lament."
Could she let it rip or what? Ruth Copeland was born in England and became the first white artist signed to Holland-Dozier-Holland's Invictus label. These sessions represent her first two albums for the label, both released in 1971: I Am What I Am and Self Portrait. Her singing is also omnipresent on the first Parliament album Osmium. These sides are a remastered reissue of the two out of print albums called Deep Beats in 1997. This is splendidly wide-ranging stuff, from folk and pop to hard, sexual funk. The backing of Parliament and other members of the George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars certainly help here. Gimme Shelter: The Invictus Sessions is absolutely necessary. ~ Thom Jurek
Full Title - Gimme Shelter - The Invictus Sessions. 2002 two-fer for British born blues folksinger. Combining her 1969 debut album, Self Portrait with 1971's I Am What I Am, both originally released on the Invictus label & featuring George Clinton's Parliament as backing band. 15 tracks including her cover of the Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter'. Castle. 2002.
Hidden Gem I engineered some of these tunes in 1971 from the Indian outfit album titled "I am What I am." It was produced by Jeffrey Bowen. She was an English Blues singer who could belt out a tune with her sultry voice. It is sad we didn't hear more from her. George Clinton's band became Ruth's backup band - Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell and company; basically the Funkadelic's. Check it out you won't be disappointed. This record is amazing Every person I've ever played this to has gone out and bought it. I highly recommend the track Music Box which descends into Ruth weeping mournfully overtop a rollicking funk stomper. Ruth was brilliant, and criminally overlooked. Picture Karen Carpenter on a bad LSD trip being backed by Parliament. How do records like this even exist? Submitted by muffin23 (Muffinville) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
