For their third album HOME, the Dixie Chicks went back to their bluegrass roots in crafting a record fired in the kiln of recent motherhood and a highly publicized legal battle with their label. Recorded under the gentle hand of producer Lloyd Maines (front Chick Natalie's pop), these dozen cuts are devoid of any Nashville gloss and are instead steeped in the organic harmonies and twang of recent releases by Nickel Creek and Dolly Parton. With sisters Marty Maguire and Emily Robison providing instrumental support on fiddle and banjo respectively, the Chicks are equally at home ripping through the runaway breakdown "White Trash Wedding" as they are tapping into heartfelt compositions by Radney Foster ("Godspeed [Sweet Dreams]") and Patty Griffin ("Top Of The World"). With pop sensibilities that are never too far from the surface, it's no surprise that this talented trio would do such a fine job covering Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and giving it the kind of shimmering treatment sure to put a smile on Stevie Nicks's face. Despite the duress the Dixie Chicks were toiling under, HOME proves that from turmoil comes stellar creative effort.
HOME won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Album.

The Chicks Can Pick This is basically an acoustic Bluegrass album (never mind that Sheryl Crow remix of their cover of the Fleetwood Mac song 'Landslide'), but it has crossover appeal. The Dixie Chicks prove that they are masters of their instruments, their harmony vocals are impeccable, and they are excellent at choosing topnotch songs that they can make their own ('Landslide', the Patti Griffin penned 'Truth No. 2', and Bruce Robison's 'Travelin' Soldier'). with that said, 'The Chicks' lay down some excellent tracks penned by themselves. The all-out hootenanny of 'Tortured, Tangled Hearts', a song about the misteps of relationships and love, is ample proof of their skills as both song writers and musicians.
Forget about their first 2 albums which were basically typical, Tim McGraw, Shania Twain type 'Pop-Country' fare that was obviously beneath their talents and skip right to Home, even if you're not exactly a Country or Bluegrass fan. You will find something enjoyable about this record. Submitted by a reviewer (Queens, NY) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Did Not Hit Home ! As the headline suggests, this material did not Home for me. Although if the new single from their 4th album suggests anything, it suggests that they are not backing down from the fight or their freedom of speech. Natilie should have left her private feelings private, but since that didn't happen, she should not back away from all those who chose to disagree with her. Whether it is the president that you disagree with or don't like, in this country you have that freedom. If all those that felt different from Natalie are Republicans or Bible Belters, we are sorry to hear that, you can't be Republicans, Democrats and a good Christian at the same time. As the Bible points out, "No one can slave for two masters". Let Natalie have her freedom of speech, it shouldn't matter to all you hypocrites anyway. Breath of Fresh Air Full of style, depth and quality, it is a classic and timeless album. One of the best put together albums I have ever heard. Each song has a disticnt sound and subject and is far ahead of the blandness on the radio.
Thank God for the Dixie Chicks, Brad Paisley and Alan Jackson for giving us real, smart and catchy country Submitted by indyjones2131 (Lousiana) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo

Home is where the music is I was pleasantly surprised at how many great songs were on this CD. There are only about 2 that don't excite me, but otherwise it is terrific crusing music! I liked it so much I bought it in cassette also so I have it where ever I go. I think it is a must have! Submitted by a reviewer (Washington State) Was This Review Helpful?
