Onyx album
$9.58 After 40 years, a number of ill-conceived posthumous albums, and countless bootlegs, one would almost have to be skeptical of a new album billed as "12 previously unreleased studio recordings -- almost 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix!" The good news is that Valleys of Neptune largely delivers on that promise. Even hardcore collectors will likely be surprised at how much of this album they haven't heard. But much of this material has been available before in some form, official and otherwise. Although there were tons of posthumous overdubs, elements of these very versions of "Stone Free" and "Hear My Train Comin'" were used as building blocks for the versions on Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning, respectively. Additionally, this version of "Stone Free" was included on 2000's The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, the only difference being that Noel Redding's bass and vocals were replaced with Billy Cox's bass from a slightly later studio session. An excerpt of the tune "Valleys of Neptune" was released as part of the Lifelines radio program box set, but that track ("Mr. Bad Luck" [aka "Look Over Yonder"]) and "Lullaby for the Summer" (basically an instrumental version of "Ezy Rider") were all well-known to collectors. However, Eddie Kramer's fresh mixes make them all sound better than ever. "Fire," "Red ...
| | Lady Antebellum Need You Now CD (2010)
Onyx CD music
$12.39 Lady Antebellum prefaced the release of Need You Now by issuing its title track as a single; it reached the top spot on the country charts and stayed there for five straight weeks. It was their second number one, and they wasted no time following it with "American Honey," a mere two months before this set was in stores. This singing and songwriting trio -- lead vocalists Charles Kelly, and Hillary Scott with multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist Dave Haywood -- understand how Nashville works, and how to work it. On their sophomore effort, they stick very close to the formula of their debut: a slew of mid- and uptempo love songs, a sad ballad, and a couple of rocked-up good-time tunes -- all self-written with some help from some of Nashville's most respected writers. Kelly's baritone is emotive, expressive, and deep in the pocket, no matter what he's singing. He shines on the soft rocking "Love This Pain," which could have been (and perhaps will be) a single. ...

Onyx album
$11.29 It's been eight long years between Maxwell's third and fourth studio albums. BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is the first release of a trilogy, with BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(rooted in gospel, with a twist, apparently) and BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(promised as a disc of slow jams) to follow. Just as Maxwell arrived in 1996, offering an alternative to the exaggerated masculinity that was dominating contemporary R&B, he returns when the airwaves are still stuffed with raging hormones. He has made no concessions to them however--the highly romantic BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is all devotion, regret, and heartache. Maxwell's backing musicians morph with every shift in emotion through arrangements that are unfailingly exquisite and sensitively ...

| | Vic Lewis Singin' The Blues CD (2001)
Onyx album
$15.69 Two major figures of English jazz, drummer Jack Parnell and guitarist Vic Lewis co-led a band in the 1944-1945 time frame. This album compiles the entire recorded output of the outfit, all recorded for the Parlophone label. Many members were World War II RAF veterans ready to get back to work playing jazz. Their exuberance at being back is heard on all the sessions. They played swing and traditional jazz, a mix of Chicago and New Orleans with a touch of British flavor thrown in. The group worked well in ensemble and had outstanding individual playing, as demonstrated on "Prince of Wails," featuring Billy Riddick on trumpet and Dick Katz on piano. Although born in Baltimore, MD, Katz spent some time playing in England before returning to the U.S. Lewis was to come to the U.S. much later to produce bop-oriented albums with West Coast jazzmen, and Parnell joined the Ted Heath band. The sessions were not limited to up-tempo material by any means. There's a traditional blues number, "Mean Old Bed Bug Blues," with Vic Lewis taking the vocal, with Riddick once again on trumpet. Riddick had an exceptionally clean, pure sound which contrasted nicely with the wail of Derek Hawkins' clarinet. This track is one of the finest on this 24-track set. The play list also is one of the reasons ...
