This is perfection...well, at least close to it! OK, I guess if this collection had included "Love Will Follow" from VOX HUMANA, then I could say it truly is perfect. (Side note: I highly recommend seeking out his hard-to-find LOVE SONGS collection since it does include that track and is a great CD overall.)
That being said, this is the most complete Kenny Loggins collection out there. It's a thorough career retrospective starting with his Loggins & Messina days and going all the way up to his last pop album. It's in chronological order with just a few variations that don't take away from the flow. And ALL of his well-known songs are here, even ones that were radio favorites and may not have been released as singles. I know, I know: Ultimately somebody will say, "But I can't believe they didn't put ______ on there!" Well, heck, we all have personal preferences when it comes to greatest-hits and best-of collections, but I think whoever compiled this one did an OUTSTANDING job. And they even included both the original version of "Pooh Corner" along with the updated version featuring Amy Grant. Very wise choice!
The sound quality on all the tunes is great. I haven't had the chance to check out the liner notes yet (I miss the days when I actually took the time to READ them!), but I seriously doubt that they would affect my rating. It's what's in the Performance! If you have ever been present at a live performance with Kenny Loggins, you would unquestionably agree that you’ve just witnessed an unforgettable concert event. Loggins is a musical performer in the truest sense. The CD’s we may listen to are only a shadow of the command performance Loggins’ presents on stage. While performing in Phoenix, the city experienced a power outage. Within the darkened concert hall ushers held flashlights, spotlighting Loggins who then assembled the band and in the stillness of the crowd, played a two hour acoustic session. When the lights came on, he then played on for an additional hour. Having worked with many performers—without a doubt, Loggins’ response to this unexpected interruption demonstrated exceptional professionalism. A night to remember, to Kenny Loggins and the band, a personal thank you. Buy this CD… (Digially Remastered) Submitted by DM (Detroit) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
witness the decline While Legacy's "Essential" series has put together some outstanding and truly essential collections (see the Clash's and Stevie Ray Vaughan's for five-star examples), others demonstrate why the punk rock credo "corporate rock sucks" had - and still has - mondo merit.
Loggins & Messina had some credibility, mostly from Messina's involvement with Buffalo Springfield. "Angry Eyes" is still one of the best songs ever recorded. After the duo split, Loggins rarely achieved rock excellence on his own, the most notable exception being "I'm Alright". He, instead, chose to write and record horrid pieces of sap and drone, presumably to sell more records. Examples of this: "Whenever I Call You Friend", "Forever", "Meet Me Halfway", "Danger Zone"...the list goes on and literally goes on for a disc and a half here.
The '80s were rough on all of us. Those who lived through it and still appreciate the music of that time are prime examples of poor souls who were sold a faulty bill of goods and are still paying for it today. If you're looking to relive those days, you'll find much to bore yourself with here. If you're looking to redeem yourself, look elsewhere.
