Born in 1972, Italian heavy metal guitarist Luca Turilli fits right into the Generation X demographic. He wasn't even born when the Beatles broke up, and Nirvana and Pearl Jam were riding high when he turned 21 in 1993. So if he's going to play metal, one would expect it to be alternative metal. But in fact, Turilli's specialty is conceptual fantasy metal and progressive rock as we knew it in the '70s and '80s -- sort of Iron Maiden and Queensr˙che meet Rush, Yes, and Genesis, with a strong appreciation of European classical music. Not exactly the type of thing listeners ordinarily expect from one of rock's post-Baby Boomers, but Prophet of the Last Eclipse demonstrates that Turilli is quite serious about what he does. Some might argue that the Rhapsody guitarist is a little too serious -- that this 2002 solo outing is a perfect example of the sort of pretentiousness that punk was rebelling against back in the late '70s. But there is no reason why rock shouldn't accommodate a variety of approaches; there is room for rockers who are raw, simple, and basic, as well as rockers who are more involved and complex. And Prophet of the Last Eclipse (whose fantasy-based lyrics thrive on dungeons-and-dragons imagery) is certainly complex, not to mention overblown. Both lyrically and musically, Turilli's symphonic blend of fantasy metal, prog-rock, and Euro-classical is as grandiose as it gets. Prophet of the Last Eclipse lacks even the slightest trace of irony, which is a big part of its charm. Those who insist that rock should always thrive on simplicity will no doubt find Turilli's excesses hard to take, but someone who appreciates fantasy metal and progressive rock at their most conceptual and overblown will find a lot to enjoy about this intriguing, if self-indulgent, CD. ~ Alex Henderson

Awesome!!!!!!!!! GREAT follow up to the Nordic Twilight album. Submitted by a reviewer (Woodstock, Ill., U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Rhapsody goes STAR WARS! Luca has got to be one of the most talented composers of modern metal. Luca's work shows reason as to why its time for Yngwie to hang up the twinkies (oops I mean Guitar). This album reminds me of "Phantom Menace" era STAR WARS meets Rhapsody. Hayer's vocals are excellent, when they are not being hidden under all of the choirs. The arrangments on this album are amazing. Get this album at all costs, and hear one of the most original creations to come out of the power metal scene. I thought the whole "Cosmic Metal" thing Turilli came up with was a bit much to define the album, but I have to say it fits perfectly. I wonder if Luca is campaigning to get in the next Star Wars movie? Beware of the Dark Sith Lord Turilli. Hmmmmm Submitted by a reviewer (Baltic, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Prophet Of The Last Eclipse CD music
$13.65 Coming out of the neo-classical, theatric, fantasy-oriented school of prog metal is Rhapsody. Their style, while definitely way over the top, is rather above and beyond a lot of their ilk due to quite authentic classical/operatic elements. These elements include orchestral sections and choir-type vocal portions. Their brand of metal is certainly not lacking, though, with great intricacy, speed, and skill. The arrangements are very well done. If fantasy-oriented prog metal is your flavor, then this album is for you. It is one of the best of that style. ...

Prophet Of The Last Eclipse songs
$10.45 Long-awaited second part of the chart breaker Avantasia by mastermind Tobia Sammet from Edguy and featuring members of Gamma Ray, Rhapsody, Virgin Steele, Within Temptation, Warrior, Helloween, Angra, Kiss & Stratovarious! This Century Media Records release includes 2 bonus tracks 'Chalice Of Agony' (edit version) & 'Avantasia' (single version) for a total of 12. 2002.
Eagerly anticipated by power metal audiences who embraced Tobias Sammet's first Avantasia project, the aptly titled The Metal Opera, Pt. 2 essentially offers more of the same, in sound, style, and personnel. Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) gets credit for his appearance this time out, following his mystery cameo as "Ernie" on the first record, and a number of the featured vocalists from Pt. 1 reprise their characters on the second installment; new faces include Bob Catley (Magnum) and Oliver Hartmann (At Vance). The music is not a great leap forward; it's simply more state-of-the-art power metal, with the same catchy riffs, larger than life melodies, and complex, orchestration-heavy arrangements. Some might find it a bit less thrashy than its predecessor, but overall the differences are negligible. Sammet's epic storytelling ambitions have left him with more than enough material to keep the narrative going, and the ending is open enough to allow for a sequel if he chose. At times, The Metal Opera, ...
| | Hammerfall Crimson Thunder CD (2002)
Prophet Of The Last Eclipse album
$13.29 Hammerfall's grandiose heavy metal posturing only narrowly avoids the type of self-parody exhibited by Manowar (for that matter, the bandmembers' outfits are only slightly less ridiculous than Manowar's swords-and-loincloths look). But fans of the genre probably won't care -- the band performs its soaring power metal anthems with spirit, dedication, and heroic execution on Crimson Thunder. This is pure classicism here; Hammerfall devotedly adheres to the genre guidelines of '80s power metal, without any attempts toward innovation. Includes an inspired cover version of Chastain's obscure "Angel of Mercy" and a rather pointless take on Kiss' already overdone "Detroit Rock City." ~ Andy Hinds
2002 album includes one exclusive bonus track, a cover of the KISS classic 'Detroit Rock City'. Nuclear Blast.
