Big Swing
$12.65 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
A much admired and loved man, of all the many brilliant orchestration projects this was his finest in his own right. He teases us with the opening of 'La Nevada' until the gorgeous repeated four-bar riff finally bursts on our ears with orgasmic delight. There are wonderful brass solos from John Coles, Tony Studd and Budd Johnson and a bass showcase for Ron Carter. As the opening track peters out after 15 minutes the listener enjoys the smug realization that there are a further four outstanding pieces to come.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on November 18 & 30 and December 10 & 15, 1960. Includes liner notes by Tom Stewart and Michael Cuscuna.
Gil Evans Orchestra: Gil Evans (arranger, conductor, piano); Budd Johnson (soprano & tenor saxophones); ...
| | John Fedchock No Nonsense CD (2002)
Big Swing
$13.85 "Caribbean Fire Dance" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.
There is something refreshing about John Fedchock's approach to big-band hard bop. Unabashedly traditional, Fedchock's 17-piece ensemble (which features many top-drawer instrumentalists from New York's jazz scene) swings like they mean it. A fluid player capable of both speed and lyricism, Fedchock is located in the tradition of bop 'bone men like Curtis Fuller and J.J. Johnson. His charts are varied, complex, and colorful, and always engage the full possibilities of the large group without sacrificing solo spots.
Four of the album's 10 tracks are penned by Fedchock, and they hold up surprisingly well alongside better-known compositions from members of the jazz pantheon. Fedchock's playing stands out especially on Freddie Hubbard's gentle "Eclipse," while Joe Henderson's "Caribbean Fire Dance" allows tenor saxophonist Rick Margitza to unfurl his chops. Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday" gets a tender, almost orchestral treatment, and Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy" is driven by a tense, powerful swing. That Fedchock and company give life to these classics, and shine equally on their own material, is testament to their musical prowess.
The third Reservoir release of trombonist John Fedchock's critically acclaimed New York Big Band features Fedchock's ...

Big Swing
$13.05 The Bob Florence Limited Edition: Larry Koonse (guitar); Jeff Driscoll (clarinet, saxophone); Billy Kerr, Tom Peterson, Bob Carr, Jeff Driskill (clarinet); Don Shelton, Kim Richmond (alto clarinet); Lee Thornberg, Pete Desiena, Steve Huffsteter, Ron Stout, Larry Lunetta, Carl Saunders (flugelhorn); Alex Isles, Charlie Loper, Bob McChesney (trombone); Craig Gosnell (bass trombone); Bob Florence (piano); Trey Henry (bass instrument); Peter Eskine (drums); Peter Erskine, Scott Whitfield.
Although there weren't many big bands on the jazz scene in the 2000s, being a big band leader, composer, and arranger is no retro exercise for Bob Florence. A veteran whose experience dates back to the 1950s, Florence knows how to work a large ensemble, and 2007's ETERNAL LICKS AND GROOVES is a testament to his mastery. In re-arranging well known tunes and musical motifs by Count Basie, Claude Debussy, ...
| | Aeoliah Light Of Tao CD (1984)
Big Swing
$20.19 what inspired the creation of the light of tao was to create an album that was totally in harmony with nature and spirit....creating a natural flow without pushing or forcing something happen....so this resulted as an improvisational album that became very rich in its spontaneity, and working with 3 other fine musicians like kip setchko on flute, dallas smith on lyricon, & jean st. laurent on harp. we all let ourselves just breathe life into the music and allow the music to breathe its light and life into us. "life has no formula. like the wind blowing over the ocean and the movement of the clouds, the opening of a flower, the mover and moved are one and the same being. when we allow this natural flow within ourselves to guide our every move gently & without resistance, we become the tao. the cultural boundaries between east and west are rapidly dissolving, as intercultural ties are exchanged through our economies, ecology, & spiritual traditions which are interwoven in the fabric of our planetary evolution. this flow of nature lives and breathes in all forms of life as the tao, or "the way." "the light of tao" is an offering to this peaceful way of approaching life from a place of non-duality, and learning to walking ...
| | Ben Webster Swiss Radio Days, Vol. 10: Baden 1972 CD (1998)
Big Swing
$11.09 This live set, featuring two of the giants of tenor saxophone, is filled with great energy and excitement. Both Webster and Gordon sound inspired on this release, and pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Bo Stief, and drummer Ed Thigpen also play with great gusto. Gordon's sound (and soloing) is much more modern than Webster's. However, Webster's "old school" approach fits in nicely with these boppers, if only because his style shows that the roots of jazz are inherent in bebop.
Unfortunately, Webster doesn't play on the one ballad "Didn't We." Webster's ballad work can't be beat, and it's a shame that it isn't showcased here. Instead, we are treated to Gordon's fine tenor work on this number. All things considered, strong readings of songs such as "Some Other Blues" by John Coltrane ...
