Purchase Big Swing CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Gil Evans Out Of The Cool CD (1960)
Big Swing
$10.79 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
A much admired and loved man, of all the many brilliant orchestration projects this was his finest in his own right. He teases us with the opening of 'La Nevada' until the gorgeous repeated four-bar riff finally bursts on our ears with orgasmic delight. There are wonderful brass solos from John Coles, Tony Studd and Budd Johnson and a bass showcase for Ron Carter. As the opening track peters out after 15 minutes the listener enjoys the smug realization that there are a further four outstanding pieces to come.
Out of the Cool, released in 1960, was the first recording Gil Evans issued after three straight albums with Miles Davis -- Sketches of Spain being the final one before this. Evans had learned much from Davis about improvisation, instinct, and space (the trumpeter learned plenty, ...
| | John Fedchock No Nonsense CD (2002)
Big Swing
$13.85 "Caribbean Fire Dance" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.
There is something refreshing about John Fedchock's approach to big-band hard bop. Unabashedly traditional, Fedchock's 17-piece ensemble (which features many top-drawer instrumentalists from New York's jazz scene) swings like they mean it. A fluid player capable of both speed and lyricism, Fedchock is located in the tradition of bop 'bone men like Curtis Fuller and J.J. Johnson. His charts are varied, complex, and colorful, and always engage the full possibilities of the large group without ...

Big Swing
$13.45 Long one of the top arrangers in jazz, Bob Florence contributed seven inventive charts to five of his originals and two standards on this swinging, yet often complex, set and also takes "Never Let Me Go" as a sensitive piano solo. "Dukeisms," a lengthy piece commissioned to celebrate Duke Ellington's 100th birthday in 1999, has quotes from five Ellington pieces. Other selections include the cooking blues "Nerve Endings" (highlighted by Carl Saunders' trumpet solo), a sensitive reworking of "Chelsea Bridge," a fairly abstract "Kissing Bug," trumpeter Steve Huffsteter's ballad feature ...

| | Aeoliah Light Of Tao CD (1984)
Big Swing
$20.19 Synthesizer, electric guitar, flute and lyricon merge on this album to take the listener on a musical odyssey... ~ MusD
what inspired the creation of the light of tao was to create an album that was totally in harmony with nature and spirit....creating a natural flow without pushing or forcing something happen....so this resulted as an improvisational album that became very rich in its spontaneity, and working with 3 other fine musicians like kip setchko on flute, dallas smith on lyricon, & jean st. laurent on harp. we all let ourselves just breathe life into the music and allow the music to breathe its light and life into us. ...

| | Gregg Karukas Blue Touch CD (1998)
Big Swing
$12.35 Sure that Gregg Karukas had reached the point where his lighthearted approach to smooth jazz was instantly recognizable, the keyboardist titled his last Positive Music release, You'll Know It's Me. Though he adds dashes of hip blues textures and Crusaders-flavored twists with the Fender Rhodes (hence the title, Blue Touch), Karukas' debut is another typically high-spirited effort, a reminder as to why his albums are always perched for months in the upper reaches of the radio charts. For him, it's always about lilting, instantly memorable melodies and gentle funk. There's the spring in your step on the '70s soul-meet-'90s hip-hop of "Cruisin' Your House at Midnite" followed by the gentle piano graces of "Fly Away (Thinking of You)." He's always open to throwing in a few surprises, and on "Cruisin'," he gets a little more down and dirty with the B-3. Likewise, borrowing a lick or two of inspiration from Dave Samuels, he creates a lively, tropical playground on "Club Havana." The tendency of well-connected genre artists is to use the contributions of all-stars up front, let their flash dominate. Karukas, however, is more ...

| | Stars As Eyes Loud New Shit CD (2003)
Big Swing
$7.29 One-third new material and two-thirds remixes of songs from their second album, Enemy of Fun, Stars as Eyes' Loud New Shit takes the duo's sound in several different directions that fit together surprisingly well. As with Enemy of Fun, new songs like "Rotten" and "Guardian of Cemetaries" are brighter and more immediate than their earlier work, but this time around the band seems even more comfortable working within a pop context. The chiming, buzzy electro-pop of "Some Life" even includes vocals, while "Song With the Word Disco in the Title"'s bells ...
