| | Art Zoyd Nosferatu CD - Import Art Zoyd Discography of CDs
NOSFERATU features music composed by Art Zoyd for a 1998 rerelease of the classic 1922 silent film. As an added bonus, the disc contains music composed the previous year for VORGANCE.
Nosferatu is the first of three scores for silent horror movies the Belgian group Art Zoyd recorded between 1989 and 1997. Friedrich Wilheim Murnau's classic Nosferatu served as the first guinea pig and it worked wonderfully. This happened at a time when performing new music over screenings of silent films had yet to become a trend in avant-garde circles (in the mid- to late '90s), although this particular film was enjoying a revival of sorts (metallers Helstar released an album by the same title in 1989). The group managed to remain true to Murnau's chef-d'oeuvre while delivering a genuine Art Zoyd platter. The lineup is the same as for 1987's Berlin, but the ideas have matured. Taking a cue from the previous album's "A Drum, a Drum," the music includes vocal passages, some sung by Thierry Zaboitzeff in a low, gravely, hellborn voice, others being pre-recorded children's choir parts. The 60-minute suite follows the film scene by scene, but it stands marvelously well on its own. Keyboards are definitely dominating the sound, with touches of cello and saxophone added for an extra Gothic feel. Often fast-paced and exhilarating, the music consists of interlocking rhythmical motifs on keyboards punctuated by orchestral cues, percussion, or acoustic instruments. Melodies are few; the grandeur and drama rarely let go. The CD is rounded up by the three-part, 17-minute "Vorgänge," ballet music for the Salzburg Vorgänge Bewegungstheater. If you don't notice the track number on the CD player, you'll think you're still in Nosferatu. This album is generally more inspired, varied, lively, and less-complacent than Faust and Häxan, Art Zoyd's two other film soundtracks. Highly recommended, even to those who despise the group's post-1983 output. ~ François Couture

Nosferatu album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop ...

$22.09 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. ...

$50.89 This is a 1971solo live set by folk-rock singer-songwriter John Sebastian, featuring "Mobile Line" and "Lovin' You."
Like some other live albums, this one was released to provide an alternative to a bootleg. But in this case, the particular bootleg appeared to be a legitimate release. The early years of John Sebastian's solo career were bedeviled by a contract dispute involving his move from MGM records to Reprise records, and in the course of it, MGM obtained a tape of a Sebastian ...

$20.09 The second album by Jackson Heights wasn't as nondescript as many similarly obscure efforts from bands led by musicians -- in this case, ex-Nice guitarist/bassist/singer Lee Jackson -- who pretty much vanished from the limelight after their stint with a famous group. Jackson also deserved some credit for being bold enough to move into directions in which the Nice weren't associated; 5th Avenue ...
