Labyrinth / Roots
$9.35 One of the Canterbury scene's most revered bands, Hatfield and the North made up for the brevity of their career with some fascinating music. Always adventurous, the quartet had the keen sense to realize that only the most hardened jazz fans respond to numerous key changes and exceedingly complex time signatures, and thus enlivened their live set with the odd gnome smashing, suggestive lyrics, and jokey song titles. It worked a charm, with the band quickly amassing a large, loyal following at home in Britain and across the continent. On their eponymous debut, Hatfield stunningly succeeded in translating both their sense of fun and their musical brilliance onto disc. After a bit of light humor, the band slide into "Going Up to People and Tinkling", which glides gloriously across the keys and rhythm shifts. Both "Calyx" and "Aigrette" experiment with vocals as an instrument, while the exuberant "Rifferama" is a master class on the use of riffs. However, it's the expansive "Son of `There's No Place like Homerton'" that is ...
| | Traffic Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Labyrinth / Roots
$6.65 THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS was a big change from the quiet, largely acoustic flavor of Traffic's reunion album JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE. Although the gentle opening track, "Hidden Treasure," and the meandering, mellow closer, "Rainmaker," were in keeping with the pastoral vibe of the previous record, sandwiched in between those are several increasingly aggressive and lyrically sour songs about that evergreen topic--life in a rock & roll band.
The venality of the business gets a workout in the 12-minute title track, a slow-building jazz-rock groove that starts with a sense of quiet menace and ends with a pealing, distorted guitar solo, with one of Steve Winwood's most impassioned and lengthy organ solos at the song's heart. "Rock & Roll Stew" and Jim Capaldi's sneering putdown "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" are even more forceful, with only the groovy ecological message of "Many a Mile to Freedom" ...

| | Alan Jones Sextet Unsafe CD (2004)
Labyrinth / Roots
$15.19 Led by extraordinary drummer/composer Alan Jones who built his own drums and plays barefoot - this Sextet is NOT just another jazz group. While firmly rooted in tradition, their music is so fresh and exciting that it has managed to catch the attention of purists as well as a whole generation of younger fans who usually ignore anything resembling mainstream jazz. These veteran musicians, John Gross (tenor sax), Warren Rand (alto sax), Paul Mazzio (trumpet), Randy Porter (piano), Dan Schulte (bass), and Alan Jones (drums) play their lives on their instruments. It is rare to hear such unbridled honesty. These artists have made ...

| | Raspberries Live On Sunset Strip CDs (2007) With DVD
Labyrinth / Roots
$20.49 Capturing the classic power-pop band's 2005 reunion with its original line-up, this excellent 13-track set is as clean and crisp as the suits the band so often wore. All the hits are here--including "Tonight," "I Wanna Be With You," and "Go All the Way"--and the band sounds energized and delighted to be performing together, with lead singer Eric Carmen crooning in a respectably strong voice throughout. The Raspberries always had the perfect name for a power-pop band, as they were deliciously sweet, but had just enough of a tart attack to avoid sugar shock. And as this set so aptly proves, the Raspberries remain in season.
This DVD marks the triumphant return after 30 years of the Raspberries' original line-up of Eric Carmen, Wally Bryson, Dave Smalley, and Jim Bonfanti, recording at Los Angeles' House of Blues during their sold-out 2005 reunion tour. The 2CD/DVD set includes the entire ...
