Beautiful World marks the debut from one of Alan Thicke's sons, Robin. Like Morrissey, Thicke rides his last name, but musically he's on track with Jamiroquai and Justin Timberlake. He comes up with a delectable pop mix that's part Motown and part funk, giving Beautiful World a wide musical palette of sensuality and color. Thicke sets things up to be an emotional roller coaster that is self-searching and hungry for love, and such a move is impressive, but from the album opener, "Oh Shooter," one can sense the album struggling to develop into a full, solid set. Lyrically, Thicke is a little green, and as a singer his angel-like falsetto doesn't stretch far enough. He's riding the neo-soul/blue-eyed soul wave of the new millennium, which is definitely a welcomed effort inside the world of radio-tailored pop music. Unfortunately, that poses Beautiful World to get lost in the shuffle. Those who will take the time to really listen to Thicke's sweet stories will find Beautiful World to be enjoyable. "Brand New Jones" is a sunshiny groove layered in golden, synth hooks. "Flowers in Bloom" and the title track swoon with a springlike appeal; quick electronic beats soar throughout the latter, making for a feel-good moment. "When I Get You Alone" samples Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 for a funky R&B cut, and Thicke is stylishly slick throughout this sexy romp until the words, "Baby girl, you the sh*t/That makes you my equivalent" cheese things out. "I'm 'a Be Alright" doesn't do much better, for Thicke's vocals are hushed for some added sexual appeal, Lenny Kravitz-style, but it's already been done before. "Cherry Blue Skies" allows the album to bounce back just a bit before coming to a close. It's too bad Thicke didn't make Beautiful World as strict and raw as this perfect smooth soul standout, but it's safe to say that it's a sign of good things to come. Thicke has potential and Beautiful World is real, but much too focused on being a hardcore soul thing. Remy Shand pulled it off, but Thicke tried too hard. ~ MacKenzie Wilson Who would have ever guessed that the son of the writers of theme songs for TV's FACTS OF LIFE and DIFFERENT STROKES would grow up to become one of the most exciting R&B artists of the early 21st century? Well that's exactly the case with Robin Thicke (son of TV personalities/composers Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring). Thicke's debut album A BEAUTIFUL WORLD puts Justin Timberlake to shame in the caucasian-Michael Jackson sweepstakes, even as it leaves behind cliched pop trappings for a quirky, innovative sound that owes more to Maxwell or D'Angelo (not to mention Stevie Wonder) than to any cookie-cutter R. Kelly wannabe. Thicke's velvety voice moves sinuously through the songs without ever overstating its case, and the production (by Thicke and his drummer Pro J) is subtle, complex, and endlessly surprising. Somehow he manages the difficult feat of taking all the elements of contemporary mainstream R&B, reshuffling them and coming out with something entirely his own. A BEAUTIFUL WORLD is a serious contender for best R&B album of 2003.
Thicke Beautiful World Songs Beautiful World Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews UNDERRATED I'm not exagerating this... THICKE is Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, & Jimi Hendrix all in one.
He writes amazing songs, he stays true to hisself.
He's not really underrated, his name's just not out there to even get 'rated.' This album needs to be selling millions. Although this album only 56,000 (according to SoundScan) Since December he has been writing and recording for A 2ND ALBUM! After A BEAUTIFUL WORLD I can't wait to hear what he comes out with next! ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER!!! (i'm not exaggerating) THICKE is one of the greatest song writers of all time. I place him up with writers like JOHN LENNON, BABYFACE, & DIANN WARREN. Plus, his voice is so soulfull. I'M 'A BE ALRIGHT is my favorite song on the album. "A BEAUTIFUL WORLD" hasn't gotten any promotion at all so I'm not expecting it to even sell 1 million copies. But I think it should be selling millions and millions. Anyone who knows and likes music should get this album. It's filled with R&B/SOUL, and a little touch of ROCK. The perfect album! Ecclectic soul album I was very impressed with this album, being a fan of all different types of music, I thought it had something for everyone. The melodies were catchy and very listenable. The lyrics were lacking in some of the songs, but all in all a fun album that didn't sound like top 40. Submitted by a reviewer (New Jersey, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
