Diva Series
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, ...

$12.89 This is the third album by this Seattle, Washington-based jazz trio and it is a flat-out winner. They're joined by guitarist Bill Frisell on four of the tracks, including the absolutely dazzling opener, "Pike Or Pine." Written by saxophonist Jessica Lurie, it manages to be both wistful and propulsive, enveloping and mysterious. Lurie and bass player Arne Livingston again wrote the bulk of the material. The title track is the sole number penned by drummer Dale Fanning. Fanning's ...

$31.55 This box combines three of Miles Davis's best releases, but the comparisons end there. While SKETCHES OF SPAIN, KIND OF BLUE, and IN A SILENT WAY are masterpieces, three less similar records would be hard to find in Davis's prolific catalogue.
SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the last of Davis's collaborations with the great composer/arranger Gil Evans, and it is as much ...

| | Ron Davis Subarashii Live CD (2007)
Diva Series
$16.45 Subarashii Live captures two capacity-audience concerts, given at the historic Paul Hahn Pianos, in Toronto, in April 2006. Subarashii is Japanese for great! Ron has toured Japan successfully three times. The title is a nod to the deep connection he feels. The album’s songs are as wide ranging and expansive as the Pacific Ocean he crossed to get there.Alleluja is a languid waltz, with saxophonist Richard Underhill’s beautiful horn arrangements. Mio Latino features two distinct Latin grooves. Whirlycurl is a high energy tune, based on the jazz classic I Found a New Baby. It leads into the exuberant Applausable Excuse, in which you feel the crowd’s enjoyment. Always inclusive, Ron takes great care to compose songs that let his band mates shine. Upside Downes features world-class bassist Mike Downes. This is followed by Le Réel de Pointe-au-Pic, an old-time Québecois fiddle tune, Ron performs with the gifted Ukrainian-Canadian clarinet and sax virtuoso, Sasha Boychouk. Pas mal, non? Next, drummer Ted Warren struts his stuff in Roundly Warren Ted. “It’s hard to exaggerate how highly we think of Ted- he’s a brilliant, one-of-a-kind innovator,” Ron boasts. From Ron’s 2004 album Mungle Music, D'Hora is one of Ron’s most popular tunes. It’s rearranged here for quintet, and everyone goes to town with its energy. Hoagy Carmichael’s The Nearness of ...
