| | Billie Holiday Diva Series CD Billie Holiday Discography of CDs
Recorded between 1939 & 1957. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
Part of Verve's Diva Series of compilations, this Billie Holiday collection is by no means the definitive account of her career -- Columbia's Lady Day: The Best of Billie Holiday takes that honor. That said, it is still a great introduction to the vocalist's singular and influential style. There is a timely flow to the track listing on most of the Diva Series albums, and this collection is no exception. Included are such landmark recordings as "Don't Explain," "God Bless the Child," and Holiday's haunting signature tune, "Strange Fruit." Longtime Holiday fanatics will most likely already have these recordings, but for newly interested listeners, at over 14 tracks, this competes well with other similar single-disc collections. ~ Matt Collar
This is part of Verve's Diva Series.

Diva Series CD music
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the ...

Diva Series music CDs
$8.69 Recorded between 1955 & 1962. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
One of the best pairings of an artist with a label since Frank Sinatra swung into the Capitol offices, Anita O'Day's time under the Verve umbrella (also including Clef and Norgran) resulted in some of the best pop music of her era. O'Day's entry in 2003's The Diva Series is one of the better single-disc wrap-ups ...

| | Fats Waller Complete Recorded Works Vol. 1: Messin' Around With The Blues CDs (2007) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Diva Series album
$25.99 For decades Fats Waller's recorded legacy has found its way into the lives of jazz heads and regular folks throughout the world, most often in piecemeal fashion through "best-of" collections that fixate upon his most popular recordings from the 1930s and early '40s, or in mammoth "complete editions" inevitably peppered with gaps and flaws. "Messin' Around with the Blues" is volume one in JSP's Complete Recorded Works of Thomas Fats Waller. Spread across four compact discs, one-hundred vintage tracks map nearly every single recording session that Waller participated in between October 21, 1922 and June 18, 1928. Sound is good throughout, and some of the early pressings sound much better than they did when reissued by the Classics label. This comes very close to being the best early Fats Waller reissue project the world has ever seen. Beginning with his first two piano solos, JSP traces young Waller's progress with almost unprecedented thoroughness, following him from date to date as he accompanies vocalists (most notably Alberta Hunter and ...

| | Ron Davis Subarashii Live CD (2007)
Diva Series music CDs
$16.45 Subarashii Live captures two capacity-audience concerts, given at the historic Paul Hahn Pianos, in Toronto, in April 2006. Subarashii is Japanese for great! Ron has toured Japan successfully three times. The title is a nod to the deep connection he feels. The album’s songs are as wide ranging and expansive as the Pacific Ocean he crossed to get there.Alleluja is a languid waltz, with saxophonist Richard Underhill’s beautiful horn arrangements. Mio Latino features two distinct Latin grooves. Whirlycurl is a high energy tune, based on the jazz classic ...
