Wonderful, Wonderful Music
If you don't know any of Daniel Catan's rich, songful music I cannot urge you too vigorously to investigate this wonderful work. Written in a rich, late romantic style, this fine opera sings its way to your heart. I would urge readers to investigate Naxos' cheap disk of excerpts from 'Obsiddian Butterfly' and 'Rapacinni's Daughter' then rush out to buy this beautifully presented and magnificently performed work from Houston Opera. Bravo. Please, please let's have more Catan.

A STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL OPERA FOR THE MODERN AGE
This is quite simply one of the most beautiful operas you are ever likely to encounter. Catan's abundant supply of rich, memorable melody is overwhelming in it's impact. Imagine Puccini spiced with Villa-Lobos and you'll have a good idea of his sound world, which nonetheless still manages to be distinctive. It is particualrly courageous of Catan to have stuck to his compositional principles and create such a lyrical and, dare I say it, tonal score in this age of general angst-ridden ugliness. If I were clever enough to be a multi-millionaire I think I just may be moved enough to personally fund a series of performances here in London's Royal Opera House as a token of my faith is such a masterpiece. In the meantime can I suggest you invest in this set and be prepared to be absolutely enchanted.

Enchantment on the Amazon
From the first chord, Daniel Catan's music creates an enchanting sweep of melody, human conflict and resolution, and a feeling of being on the massive river. The artists are superb in each characterization. The ensemble work reflects marvelous diction, vocal precision and the voices blend and compliment each other at all times. I look forward to hearing much more of Mr. Catan's music and would be priviledged to hear and see any of the artists on this fine recording. Kudos to Houston Opera for presenting this wonderful work.
