Wonderful
I loved reading the reviews of World of Noise on this site, and realising that this fantastic album is being enjoyed by other people too.
Sparkle and Fade will always be the definitive Everclear album, and one of the most compelling things about World of Noise is seeing all Alexakis' lyrical and musical ideas in their earliest forms. A lot of the best lyrical embodiments that appear of World of Noise are repeated on later albums in fuller, more developed form, but the unconfident, unsure way they are blurted out here is innocent, poetic and beautiful.
Indeed Everclear themeselves sparkled and faded, but this and the second album will always exist as relics of great, heartfelt music.

great cd
everclear is extremely underrated! it is unfortunate that they are only known for their new hits. the only new cd they released that was great was good time for a bad attitude. PLEASE if you listened to their new stuff and hate it. buy sparkle and fade and then this album.

WORLD OF NOISE
So sad that it's possible for a band that made one of the greatest indie rock albums ever to become a sell-out underrated band.
This is my favorite CD out of everything that I've heard, which is funny, considering it's Everclear, the band known only for its worst album, Songs From An American Movie Vol. One: Learning How To Smile.
I would very much agree when this album is compared to Nirvana. The distorted grunge on this album comes fairly close to that of Bleach.
Anyway, Everclear is a GREAT hard rock band... unfortunately it only shows on this and on their best album, Sparkle and Fade.
I am going to dissect this CD song by song:
Your Genius Hands - A great first song, my second favorite on the CD. There's one second of high distortion at the very beginning that it wouldn't feel complete without, and the main guitar rhythm is raw and awesome. And the distortion at the end is great, too.
Sick And Tired - Bass galore. This song about suicide is meaningful while also sorta redeemed by the fact that, well, they didn't commit suicide. Like the first track, this ends with distortion, but I like this ending better.
The Laughing World - My third favorite song on the CD. The constant pulling back guitar distortion is really cool.
Fire Maple Song - The great lyrics about death and memories by Alexakis does foreshadow the more emotion stuff Everclear will eventually sell out with. I'm glad they put this on the Best Of CD, because this needs to be cherished.
Pennsylvania Is... - The beginning of this song gets louder, with a drum roll and a kinda snazzy guitar riff. In my opinion, it's the second most meaningful song (first being Invisible) on the album. It's about the anti-abortion laws Pennsylvania used to have, with the "..." in the title of the song leading to "is wrong!", which is yelled at the end of the song.
Nervous And Weird - This song makes the CD harder again after the last two tracks.
Malevolent - Another soft song, about a guy hitting his girlfriend after she tells him she wants to break up.
Sparkle - I think this song kinda pairs with Nervous And Weird, just my opinion. Anyway, it starts with this cool guitar bit that shows up once more in the song, the second time increased with yells.
Trust Fund - I heard this song is a redo of the one by Colorfinger, Alexakis's pre-Everclear band, except that it's much more distorted. And it's true, this is probably the most distorted song on the album.
Loser Makes Good - This is a soft song about a homeless man.
Invisible - My favorite song on the album. It's about having AIDS, with lines such as "Sometimes I get so mad, I just wanna break the world." It's also actually true... Scott Cuthbert, R.I.P., their drummer, got AIDS from heroine needles (they all did drugs, but all quit before they became a band, and wrote many songs about it, and also never started again) and died after this one album, so they got Greg Eklund. What I also love about this song is it ROCKS. The guitar and bass are just plain awesome.
Evergleam - This finishing song is also great, especially following Invisible. It's really upbeat and almost kinda happy... a rocking way to end this great album.
So people, if you like indie rock or hard rock or distortion, GET THIS CD NOW!!!

This Cd is great and funky fresh!
"World Of Noise" is a fabulous Cd and was made in its own time. This Cd almost sounds like a tragic film making every song a new story and an unpredictable story, as well. From "Fire Maple Song," a tale of sad and distorted memories, to "Loser Makes Good, " A song of a man in denial about where he stands in this world and his self-confidence, this Cd really does create a WORLD OF NOISE.
