| | Jackie McLean Jackie's Bag CD Jackie McLean Discography of CDs
By the late 1950's, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean had shaken off any comparisons to Charlie Parker (or other Parker followers), and had become a distinctive performer in his own right. JACKIE'S BAG, assembled from a couple of 1959 sessions, ... Full Descriptionis a fantastic set of hard bop originals with hints of modality (think Miles Davis from this period) and the avant-garde (think Ornette Coleman, who later recorded with McLean). The original release bolstered by three bonus tunes, BAG is full of surging, moody and ominous-sounding jazz with plenty of wonderful solos from McLean, trumpeter Donald Byrd, and the under-recorded saxophonist Tina Brooks.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on January 18, 1959. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Bob Blumenthal.
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Tina Brooks (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Sonny Clark, Kenny Drew (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor, Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Jackie's Bag album
$10.29 Before he became one of the major crossover performers in jazz, trumpeter Donald Byrd also typified American hard bop. His bright, melodious, quick-witted tone shone in all contexts (including John Coltrane, Jackie McLean, and others), but especially ...

Jackie's Bag album
$9.69 Given the date of this release and the band lineup, one might assume that this is a straight-up hard-bop album. However, this 1966 Joe Henderson record--featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers--is a great example of modern jazz at its best. MODE FOR JOE was recorded during a time of sweeping musical changes due to developments in free jazz, soul jazz, and even early experiments with fusion. It was a time when the bluesy and funky leanings of hard-boppers were giving way to more individualized contemporary approaches. One of the best examples of this shift, MODE FOR JOE sounds more like the experimental work of Branford Marsalis than the groovy musings of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
The last track on MODE FOR JOE, "Free Wheelin'," is the only dyed-in-the-wool hard-bop tune heard here. Other than that, this outing's mostly up-tempo songs serve as vehicles for solos. Henderson himself proves that the template for players such as Marsalis, Joe Lovano, and Joshua Redman was invented a generation earlier, as evidenced on "A Shade of Jade," ...

| | Brave Combo Polkasonic CD (1999)
Jackie's Bag music CDs
$13.89 Since the early '80s, Texas-based Brave Combo has been redefining polka music. The group mixes "pure" polka (like jazz, and most other American forms, polka came from a fusion of many styles and ethnicities) with rock & roll, cumbia, mambo, Tex-Mex, and anything that strikes the band's fancy. Brace Combo are not postmodern jokers--they genuinely love polka music and, like all good children of the late 20th century, they put their own spin on it, charging it with a rock-tinged jolt and good-natured eclecticism.
Brave Combo plays GOOD-TIME music, tunes designed to make you dance and grab a day pass from your troubles. The giddy melody and vocals of "Skytrain" belie ...

| | Paul Schneider Forever Debts CD (2006)
Jackie's Bag music CDs
$10.15 Featuring production on several songs by the inimitable Mike Musmanno (Lilys, Icarus Line), "Forever Debts" delivers on the promise of compelling, intelligent, and well-crafted songs noted by Pitchfork and CMJ on Paul Schneider's debut, "Escape Velocity". Reaching beyond the traditional pop singer/songwriter canon of influences (Elvis Costello, Elliot Smith), "Forever Debts" widens the vocabulary, sourcing inspiration from such disparate wells as Greg Kihn, The Stone Roses, Can, Chavez, Eno, and 20/20. Lyrically, "Forever Debts" deftly explores themes of money, debt, family, and work. All this over a bed of swirling, angular, and inventive hooks. A sophisticated and moving pop experience that is built to last. BIOBio:1970s: Born of unwed Jersey teen. Given to kind but temporarily seedless parents and carried to a McSuburbia in the Mojave desert. Raised by new super-hero sister on Bowie, the Clash and yellowed issues of Cream magazine.1980s: Anesthetized on cocktails and speed by age 14, a disturbed sleep under the influence of the Cure, Husker Du, and Echo & the Bunnymen.1990s: Broken and reformed at 21. Cocktails and freebase disappear and are replaced by Smiths obsession. Awoke from teenage dream to find self leaving the gates of an ivy laced college in New York City with no memory. Learn to play guitar and sing later than most. Played in clubs and wrote songs but mostly hid from the 90's NY Scene in temp jobs and girlfriends.2000: Somehow picked up by Epic Records with Replacements/Jam influenced power-pop band, Rivington. Record with producer Ted Niceley (Fugazi, Shudder to Think). Major label fracas. Band dissolves.2001: Solo. Befriend guitar wunderkind Oscar Rodriguez. Begin study with jazz composer, Bruce Arnold (past students include Lou Barlow) and avant classical composer, Edgar Grana (past students include Kip Winger). Some karmic surpluss from a past life (or dumb luck, still can't explain it) lands marriage to a lovely, lovely girl.2003: Find tapes called "Escape Velocity" in a shoebox in a closet with some old photographs and release them as an album under the name Paul Schneider. Begin to receive responses from radio outlets and music writers who call the record a cross between Elvis Costello, Elliot Smith & Gram Parsons. Pitchfork & CMJ chime in. Tour the US & UK and a bit of Deutschland in between boughts of unemployment. Strangely receive a call from Gene Simmons about buying a song from the record for his solo album. Unfortunately, terms with the God of Thunder cannot be reached.2005: Write and record a score to a movie called "Forever Debts" about a full-grown man who mortgages his life to the child's dream of rock n' roll. [ed. note: "Forever Debts" was recorded at the now defunct Jarvis Studio's in NYC and was mixed in part by super-producer Mike Musmanno (Lilys, Icarus Line, Earl Greyhound). Also present were guitar wiz Oscar Rodriguez and Sam Kassirer, ...
