Deva Premal music is a favorite of yoga studios and body workers around the globe. Her traditional chants sung in non-traditional yet reverent ways have generated a huge following for the music she makes with her partner Miten. Premal?s silky voice invites comparisons to Sade and Enya, but her choice of material is unique. World chants and traditional ethnic folk songs are brought up to date and given top-notch production values that showcase Premal?s wistful vocals. SATSANG is the pair?s first live recording and it features some of the best-loved tracks from their eight studio albums. Traditionally satsang is an evening of learning and enlightenment and an opportunity to hear the truth. Premal and Miten take that concept to heart and attempt to sing their personal truths through a set of Hindu chants, Yoruba songs, and other world-music favorites. Performing in a satsang is much different than a concert recording, as the audience does not applaud or make any noise whatsoever. Even so, the live performance with no studio overdubs generates palpable energy. On ?Yemaya Assessu,? a track originally featured on the 1998 album THE ESSENCE, Premal expresses a connection with this Yoruban chant to the mother goddess. The singer?s sincerity penetrates the recording and is unlike anything that could be captured in a studio.
