Gaelic Heart album
$10.39 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," ...

Whether you were one of the fans who feared or one of the detractors who hoped that Pink would fail to follow-up her smash debut album, M!SSUNDAZTOOD serves notice that the lady with the pink hair (yes, it still is) is more than just a one-shot flash in the pan. The grooving pop of the title-track is less hip-hop oriented than Pink's previous hits, sounding more like an amiable collision between Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray. "Don't Let Me Get Me" and "Just Like a Pill" tread even closer to pop-rock territory, the latter bearing an ...

Gaelic Heart music CDs
$13.05 Stan Bock spent quite a few years playing in the U.S. Air Force before retiring and becoming a freelance trombonist. Your Check's in the Mail is his third CD as a leader (and second release for OA2), leading a number of Portland-based musicians through a solid mix of standards, both well known and obscure jazz compositions, along with a few originals by the band, all arranged by Bock. The breezy treatment of Thad Jones' "Ain't Nothin' New" and smoldering take of Joe Henderson's "Jinriksha" bring two neglected gems back to the forefront. The Latin scoring of "On Green Dolphin Street" is a bit more contemporary in sound, utilizing electric bass and keyboards, though there's nothing light about the leader's powerful solo. Tuba player Jat Tik Clark and the presence of George Mitchell on organ make for decidedly funky "A Night in Tunisia." The familiar standard "I'll ...
