Dave Evans has been playing bluegrass for over 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down. At the end of 2002, he released two new albums, High Waters and Just Look at Me Now. While both albums would have probably fit onto one disc, the different themes and changes in band personnel seem to warrant separate releases. Whereas the first album takes a closer look at life's hard times, the latter seems more upbeat, optimistic. Dobroist Matt Mauch also brings a new element to the band, adding a touch of the blues to pieces like "Hey Mama, Just Look at Me Now." Mauch's dobro is joined by a nice mix of mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and bouncy bass, providing the perfect backdrop for a catchy set of traditional bluegrass. There's a crack version of "Next Sunday, Darling, Is My Birthday," that's as lonesome and down-home as bluegrass gets. As with High Waters, Evans has written about half of the songs and they stand up well with the public dominion material. He also handles the lead vocals, injecting a touch of mountain soul into country-blues songs like "Here's Mud in Your Eye," while Gerald Evans Jr.'s tenor and baritone parts add a little something extra to each chorus. Dave Evans and the band deliver bang-up versions of classics like "I Still Miss Someone" and "The Old Crossroads," and even cut loose on an instrumental titled "Buffalo Chips." With High Water and Just Look at Me Now simultaneously available, Evans' fans will certainly look back on 2002 as a bumper crop year. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Just Look At Me Now album
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" ...

"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer ...

A bizarre outgrowth of the martini craze and the fedora craze -- themselves unfortunate tangents of the cocktail nation craze -- the swing music fad that crested in the mid- to late '90s was responsible for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's 15 minutes, as well as an upswing in bookings for the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Vitamin Records' Swingin' to the Grateful Dead was apparently released to capitalize on this short-lived kick. Sporting zoot-suited, finger-popping skeletons on the cover and words like "jumpin'," "jitter," and swing on the back, the collection includes 12 instrumental versions of Grateful Dead songs, performed in numerous jazz-based styles. But for a subject with so much potential material, producer Steve Marsh and arranger Jim McMillan's choices are curiously ...

Just Look At Me Now music CDs
$14.25 Much like the moon in the painting that graces the cover of Defying Gravity, Cheryl Wheeler's musical offerings tend to illuminate the darker side of life. Soured relationships, a troubled world, and even a hurricane are quietly explored through Wheeler's sage lyrics and gentle acoustic guitar. This description may make the disc sound a bit depressing, but the richness of Wheeler's voice and music provide solace even when exploring the darkest places. Dealing with the loss of someone can be difficult, and in the poignant "Since You've Been Gone" Wheeler wonders why "a woman my age," with her attendant wisdom, still manages to take it all so hard. "Must Be Sinking Now" proves that moving on after ...
