Dave Evans has been playing bluegrass for over 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down. At the end of 2002, he released two new albums, High Waters and Just Look at Me Now. While both albums would have probably fit onto one disc, the different themes and changes in band personnel seem to warrant separate releases. Whereas the first album takes a closer look at life's hard times, the latter seems more upbeat, optimistic. Dobroist Matt Mauch also brings a new element to the band, adding a touch of the blues to pieces like "Hey Mama, Just Look at Me Now." Mauch's dobro is joined by a nice mix of mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and bouncy bass, providing the perfect backdrop for a catchy set of traditional bluegrass. There's a crack version of "Next Sunday, Darling, Is My Birthday," that's as lonesome and down-home as bluegrass gets. As with High Waters, Evans has written about half of the songs and they stand up well with the public dominion material. He also handles the lead vocals, injecting a touch of mountain soul into country-blues songs like "Here's Mud in Your Eye," while Gerald Evans Jr.'s tenor and baritone parts add a little something extra to each chorus. Dave Evans and the band deliver bang-up versions of classics like "I Still Miss Someone" and "The Old Crossroads," and even cut loose on an instrumental titled "Buffalo Chips." With High Water and Just Look at Me Now simultaneously available, Evans' fans will certainly look back on 2002 as a bumper crop year. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

| | Ray Wylie Hubbard A. Elightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) CD (2010) Digipak
Just Look At Me Now CD music
$11.98 Texas songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard pushed life to the margin and lived to sing about it. In the process, his songs now possess the tenderness of a poet, the empathy of a historian, and the raw nerve of a card shark. On 2009's A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C), he adds "mythmaker" to his songwriting qualities. Hubbard strips his music to the bone here, and uses the Mississippi Delta blues tradition to his own ends. His music is raw yet utterly contemporary and crafted. Snarling acoustic, slide, and electric guitars played bottleneck style, dirty mandolins, pots, pans, stomp boxes, basses, organs, harmoniums, drums, rattles, shakers, and tambourines are the instruments that fuel this impressive collection. On "Down Home Country Blues," ...

The resurgence of Chicago-based blues in the mid- to late 1960s came with an entirely new breed of icons to bear the torch. Among them were the decidedly electric Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Joining Muddy Waters (guitar/vocals) and Otis Spann (piano) on the aptly titled Fathers and Sons are three Butterfield ...

Though these 1968 sides were cut in LA at the apex of the burgeoning counterculture movement, the main influences at play here are those of the Mississippi Delta blues. Featuring early performances from Ry Cooder and Jesse Ed Davis, TAJ MAHAL is the joyfully confident debut that propelled the eponymous bluesman to national recognition. Comparable to similar experiments by Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield ...

A bizarre outgrowth of the martini craze and the fedora craze -- themselves unfortunate tangents of the cocktail nation craze -- the swing music fad that crested in the mid- to late '90s was responsible for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's 15 minutes, as well as an upswing in bookings ...

Soured relationships, a troubled world, and even a hurricane are quietly explored through Wheeler's sage lyrics and gentle acoustic guitar. This description may make the disc sound a bit depressing, but the richness of Wheeler's voice and music provide ...
