After Louis Armstrong (and before Miles Davis), the most important jazz trumpeter is John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, one of the pioneers of bebop and one of the musicians responsible for the introduction of Latin elements to jazz. MATRIX: THE PERCEPTION SESSIONS gathers together three Dizzy albums ("THE REAL THING, PORTRAIT OF JENNY, and the live GIANTS) on two discs. Gillespie's accompanists include a fair amount of jazz royalty--trumpeter Bobby Hackett (who was an influence on Miles), sax legend James Moody, master funk drummer Bernard Purdie, and legendary pianist/composer Mary Lou Williams.

WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark her as unique. The set of standards here, including "Let's Fall In Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and ...

Sham 69 was part of the original wave of UK punk bands in the mid-to-late 1970s. They were working-class lads and proud of it, completely disdaining any sort of "arty" or "pop" approaches in their rowdy but heartfelt anthem-like tunes. COCKNEY ...

Kickin' It at the Barn is Little Feat's first album for their own indie label, Hot Tomato Records, which makes more of a difference than you might think.
