$19.29 Loreena McKennitt's A MEDITERRANEAN ODYSSEY collection includes an 11-track anthology of her more Mediterranean-influenced works entitled OLIVE AND THE CEDAR, as well as a ten-track live performance recorded in 2009 called FROM ISTANBUL TO ATHENS. McKennitt's transition from Celtic balladeer to worldbeat superstar began in the early '90s with the genre-hopping VISIT. Her penchant for Mediterranean/Far East/Middle ...

| | Serge Gainsbourg Histoire De Melody Nelson CD (1971) With Book; Deluxe Edition
Singles
$13.79 Brimming with lust, drama, and dark humor, HISTORIE DE MELODY NELSON is widely acknowledged as Gainsbourg's masterpiece. The 1971 release was criminally ignored outside France-despite the godfather of French pop's decade of cutting-edge songwriting. It's now something of a cult classic, and artists as diverse as Air, Nick Cave, and Portishead have all cited the album as an influence.
Don't be put off by the "concept album" tag. There are no goblins here. Instead, Gainsbourg concentrates on his favorite subjects-sex and death. The story line concerns a chance meeting between a middle-aged man and a teenage girl that develops into a passionate affair. Never one to shy away from controversy, Gainsbourg plays his character with consummate sleaze. Remember, this man wrote the playfully obscene "Les Sucettes" for young, innocent France Gall (who thought she was singing about lollypops). Most of the lyrics are intoned in Serge's seedy seductive whisper, intertwined ...
| | Odetta Sings Dylan CD (1965)
Singles
$14.29 Upon this album's release in 1965, Bob Dylan must have felt pretty good about himself. Odetta, one of the most indelible performancers of the folk revival (and the original inspiration for Dylan's embracing of folk), turned the tables and embraced him back. While Dylan was already the epicenter of the folk world (and was soon to leave it entirely) and there had already been a spate of ...
| | Vas Feast Of Silence CD (2004)
Singles
$11.79 On the fourth album from Vas, vocalist Azam Ali and her partner, multi-instrumentalist Greg Ellis, have moved away from the sparse musical arrangements of their past and have introduced a new, elaborate sound that incorporates every instrument in the world beat library. Often favorably compared to Dead Can Dance and Axiom of Choice, Vas evolves its sound on FEAST OF SILENCE in a way that's sure to please fans and introduce the duo to a whole new audience. Guitar, bass, and other instruments have been added to their signature mix of cello, world beat percussion, and Indian flute. In addition to the expansion of the instrumental repertoire, the music on FEAST OF SILENCE shows Middle Eastern and Eastern European influence in their compositions. "Bardo" is a particularly unusual track that combines ecstatic drumming with Egyptian vocal stylings and ornamentation. Ali's vocals continue to be honey-toned, breathy, and mesmerizing, but for the first time, the Iranian-born singer performs ...
| | Steel Pulse True Democracy CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Singles
$9.29 This 1982 release, Steel Pulse's first for Elektra, marks the band's move toward a more buoyant, pop-inflected sound. TRUE DEMOCRACY does not have the edgy roots feel of albums like HANDSWORTH REVOLUTION; instead, it demonstrates the group's synthesis of reggae rhythms with high production values and well-crafted melodies. But while the album's stylistic corners may be sanded for radio-ready accessibility, TRUE DEMOCRACY contains some of the band's boldest, most explicitly political songwriting.
The opener, "Chant a Psalm," invokes the names of biblical figures and puts the listener on notice of the album's conscious, spiritually minded tone. There are classic Rasta themes, such as "Worth His Weight in Gold," a song based on the teachings of Marcus Garvey, and songs that overtly address social and political issues. "A Who Responsible?" takes on the history of racial injustice, "Leggo Beast" is an indictment of prostitution, and "Man No Sober" looks at alcoholism. Yet for all its seriousness, TRUE DEMOCRACY has a light, danceable vibe, exemplified in the party anthem "Ravers," one of Steel Pulse's best tunes. Though sometimes overlooked in favor of the early Island albums, this is one of the band's most consistent and enjoyable releases. The 2005 Rhino reissue includes previously unreleased ...
