Singles album
$19.29 Loreena McKennitt's A MEDITERRANEAN ODYSSEY collection includes an 11-track anthology of her more Mediterranean-influenced works entitled OLIVE AND THE CEDAR, as well as a ten-track live performance recorded in 2009 called FROM ISTANBUL TO ATHENS. McKennitt's transition from Celtic balladeer to worldbeat superstar began in the early '90s with the genre-hopping VISIT. Her penchant for Mediterranean/Far East/Middle Eastern instrumentation came to fruition on ...

| | Pantera Official Live: 101 Proof CD (1997)
Singles music CDs
$6.15 "Cemetery Gates" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
After seven long years of almost non-stop touring, Pantera personally chose these 16 songs as the creme de la creme, the definitive live Pantera experience. All well and good, we can only hope the folks up front had kneepads and mouthpieces, because this is not for the faint of heart. This is incendiary thrash metal; full-speed-ahead sonic mayhem, from the churning grunge of "Becoming" to the jackhammer assault of "Hostile." "New Level," the disc's opener, pretty much defines the ...

| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Singles CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts on the tracks, making them less spare and distinguishing the arrangements more. Isaacs and his backup band, the Roots Radics, had a tendency to set up a groove and play, with only minor differences from one track to the next, but Badarou brought a different flavor to each song. Isaacs responded to his greater opportunity with a strong collection of compositions, starting with the title song, which pleaded for erotic ...
| | Weird Al Yankovic Greatest Hits CD (1989)
Singles music CDs
$6.25 Though 1989's Greatest Hits only covers the first half of "Weird Al" Yankovic's career, it nevertheless features nearly all of his best work, with classics such as "Eat It," "Fat," and "I Lost on Jeopardy" chief among its highlights. The collection takes a fairly even amount from each of Yankovic's early albums -- Weird Al Yankovic, In 3-D, Dare to Be Stupid, Polka Party!, and Even Worse -- thus gathering "Like a Surgeon," "Living With a Hernia," and "Ricky" in one place. The small, parody-heavy track-listing may disappoint die-hard Yankovic fans; indeed, some of his original work from ...
| | Sonny Rollins Falling In Love With Jazz CD (1989)
Singles songs
$12.69 In a career that spanned more than five decades, Sonny Rollins has worked in nearly every style of jazz, from his early days with Miles Davis to his excursions into fusion during the 1970s. Through it all he has remained a uniquely talented player.
On 1989's FALLING IN LOVE WITH JAZZ, Rollins brings together several of his frequent '80s collaborators, including Clifton Anderson on trombone, pianist Mark Soskin and electric bassist Bob Cranshaw. On two tracks, the standard "For All We Know" and Sammy Cahn's "I Should Care," Rollins works with a group featuring such fine instrumentalists as Branford Marsalis, who contributes some Rollins-esque tenor sax, along with Tommy Flanagan on piano and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The set also includes Rollins's inimitable take on "Tennessee Waltz" and two originals, "Sister" and "Amanda," both given an intimate setting consisting of just Rollins's sax, an electric guitar and a trombone.
Recorded at Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York on ...

| | Jorge Drexler Sea CD (2004)
Singles music CDs
$7.89 SEA is a 2004 release by Uruguayan pop isnger Jorge Drexler, featuring "Horas" and "Crece"
Sea is the follow-up to Jorge Drexler's masterpiece Frontera. And although it's not as brilliant as its predecessor, it's certainly a very strong effort. Drexler is not "just" another songwriter in the Spanish tradition. He pays an unusual attention to music, not only words. In this album, loops and electronic sounds are ...
