Instrumentals: The Best Of The Chrysalis Years
$13.95 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Plenty of fireworks go off during this 1959 session that Coleman Hawkins recorded for Prestige. Here Hawkins reaches to ever higher improvisatory vistas, urged on by guest Charlie Shavers' exciting and brassy trumpet playing. On the opening track, "Hawk Eyes," guitarist Tiny Grimes uses a distorted sound to add energy and verve to the proceedings. Hawkins' own style is rich and full-bodied, and his solos are extroverted and often marked by raw, vibrato-laden playing.
On HAWK EYES, the soloists all share a distinct sense of urgency. The music is bluesy but also lush ...

| | Joan Armatrading What's Inside CD (1995) Bonus DVD; Limited Edition
Instrumentals: The Best Of The Chrysalis Years
$15.59 Initial pressings of the 2003 Denon version of WHAT'S INSIDE contain a bonus DVD featuring videos of "Everyday Boy" and "Recommend My Love"
One of Joan Armatrading's darkest and most sonically adventurous albums, 1995's WHAT'S INSIDE--her first album for RCA after a 22-year association with A&M--finds the singer/songwriter in a more contemplative mood without sacrificing the power and emotion of her earlier work. Songs like "In Your Eyes,"--the sort of song Armatrading did for 15 years before Tracy Chapman, her vocal doppelganger, achieved tremendous commercial and critical acclaim for doing the exact same thing--the gentle, acoustic "Back of the Road," the jazzy, vibes-laden "Everyday Boy," and the archetypally Armatradingesque "Shapes and Sizes" are all excellent and heartfelt. The Kronos Quartet and the Memphis Horns both guest, though unfortunately not on the same songs.
This limited edition CD/DVD combo features videos of 2 of Joan's most successful tracks, along with a 12-song ...

$18.39 After Mountain split up in 1972, it sporadically reunited in one form or another, even after bassist Felix Pappalardi's death in the early '80s. The first such reunion took place less than a year after its first split, resulting in a new studio album, AVALANCHE, and a live set, TWIN PEAKS.
Issued in 1974, TWIN PEAKS finds Pappalardi and guitarist Leslie ...
