| | John Digweed Stark Raving Mad CD John Digweed Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
This is a continuous in-the-mix CDcompiled and mixed by DJ John Digweed & Muir.
Stark Raving Mad, the soundtrack to an American film ("imagine, if you can, Trainspotting meets Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels!"), is a two-disc mix album allowing resident superstar DJ John Digweed a chance to air many of his own Bedrock-affiliated tracks -- and boost the profile of his studio boffin, Nick Muir (who co-produces all of Digweed's tracks). Though he's been one of trance's main figureheads for half a decade, Digweed's been less willing to stick with the style on a constant basis, and the tracks here reflect that. Unlike Oakenfold and Van Dyk, he's willing to push things forward slightly, with more stylistic detours and fewer concessions to fan-friendly effects and breakdowns. Early on the second disc, Digweed even approaches hard house with his spinning of "White Island" by Luke Fair, though the next track, his own "Beautiful Strange," takes the mix back into familiar territory. Digweed and Muir do accomplish much together; their tracks have the detailed, sonically sculpted perfection that's become de rigeur for trance, but also a unique sound that has nothing to do with the trance blueprint. And even though most of their productions are brief interstitial tracks, they claim two of the highlights, "Mondrian" and "Slingshot." "Kritical" by Luke Fair is a nice dub-shattered breakbeat tune, while the closer ("A Better Place" by DJ Tasmin & Monk) is unabashedly retro, heisting LTJ Bukem's blueprint for Good Looking drum'n'bass from circa 1992. The best track, hands down, is "Walking on Fire" by Evolution, the opener on the second disc, a fine piece of female-fronted techno-pop, though firmly in the mold of same. Even though this mix smacks of a Bedrock clearing house, it's refreshing to hear a few change-ups. ~ John Bush

| Stark Raving Mad Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Is it good? Eh. After enjoying GU:Los Angeles, GU:Hong Kong, the Northern Exposure series, Communicate, and most recently, the impeccable MMII, I was dissappointed with this compilation. It's as much a mix as it is a collection of songs from the movie with relatively smooth transitions. If you pick it up and listen to it with this knowledge, it's enjoyable. Just don't expect Digweed's usually level of genius and mixing wizardry. Submitted by a reviewer (Philadelphia, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Greatist Hits John Digweed is a well known English DJ who has released the indispensible Renaissance recordings as well as the Northern Exposure series. Now master Diggers has released a mix of classic dance tunes with a couple of new releases. In general, this is a strong offering including the must have Apollo Vibes and a truly remarkable drum and bass tune at the end of disc 2. However, as this is a soundtrack to a movie, these discs lack the flow of the usual Digweed comp. Another problem is the chatter in between tracks is somewhat annoying. This is overcome by the fact that the track selection for the most part is excellent. As a Digweed fan I thoroughly enjoy this mix and would recommend this with the above caveats. Happy listening!! Stark Raving Mad music CDs
$11.49 Like a male Sade, or vintage Steely Dan without the irony, smooth R&B vocalist Kem weaves mellow, late-night musical tapestries over '70s-style jazz grooves. In the process, he manages to sound completely contemporary without so much as a single hip-hop beat or squiggly synth line. Kem's voice is an instrument of subtle grace and power, his vocal timbre and clipped phrasing owing an immediately obvious debt to Sam Cooke, but, interestingly, also occasionally recalling Dave Matthews. Best of all, however, is the ...
| | Jaheim Still Ghetto CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Stark Raving Mad songs
$9.49 Though R&B pinup boy Jaheim's artistic focus is on life in the ghetto, he doesn't fall in line with the confrontational hip-hoppers who revel in the difficulties, violence, and harshness of urban life. Instead, as the album's title suggests, he focuses on the romance that blossoms even on the mean streets.
GHETTO LOVE roams smoothly from the sultry slow jam of "Looking for Love" to the '70s-style funk backing and forceful beat of "Let it Go" and the hip-hop-oriented "Li'l Nigga Ain't Mine," which revisits the theme examined in Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Jaheim is assisted on his debut album by some talented friends, including Castro, Miss Jones, and Terry Dexter, but it's his own way with a melody and knack for balancing street-cred hip-hop with heartfelt soul that are the most memorable elements on this disc.
As the title indicates, STILL GHETTO pretty much picks up where Jaheim left off with his previous album GHETTO LOVE. Once again we find the singer deftly mixing street-real themes and hip-hop production techniques with slow-jam R&B tracks and soulful vocalizing. Despite his hard-guy front, Jaheim mostly comes off as a Love ...

Stark Raving Mad songs
$13.65 This Henry Stone master (Alston Records) was handled by Atco Records for mass distribution and promotion, which didn't happen to any great extent. If you found this album in a record store north of the Mason-Dixon Line it was because of a shipping foul-up -- unfortunate, because it's one of Reid's better endeavors. Recorded at the Zoo Recording Studio in Miami, FL, like most records under Stone's family of labels, the recording was primitive, but in this case appealing. Reid updates "25 Miles," "Shop Around," and "I've Been Trying," and adds some gritty Southern soul via "Nobody but You Baby," "Send Me Back My Money," and "Polk Salad Annie." A prolific writer, Reid never really found his niche as a singer until he ventured into the novelty/party ...
