| | JC Milo Giant Bug CD JC Milo Discography of CDs
His first solo release, following a successful run with Toronto's Dizzy Spell, JC Milo carves out an impressively idiosyncratic niche with his unique brand of singer/songwriter electronica on Giant Bug. A fantastic tunesmith, crafting arrangements that are both exotic and elegant, pulling from a variety of traditions, Milo uses his deft piano melodies as a foundation for electronic experimentation. His husky, soulful voice, which given his unique phrasing is somewhat reminiscent of Sting, proves to be a suitably elastic tool, as he doesn't sound out of place crooning a dark piano ballad, cooing over a loose jazz arrangement, or accompanying a thumping Afro-pop beat. Ultimately, the influence of world music is felt deeply throughout the tracks, adding a bubbling grooviness to the more staid tracks and giving the album a particularly distinctive textural feel. The results, whether a gorgeous Randy Newman-esque piano piece ("As I Do") or an exotic Spanish groove ("World of Lies"), combine many of the strongest elements traditionally found in both singer/songwriter pop and electronic music. Overall, it would be hard to ask for much more in a debut. ~ Matt Fink
Currently making a splash on the downtown NYC scene, singer-songwriter/keyboardist JC Milo has taken hold in his new home of NYC, after conquering the Toronto music scene in the mid-nineties with local faves Dizzy Spell. With influences ranging from The Kinks to Kate Bush, JC has taken to the streets his eclectic brand of acoustic-electronica. The beats are found in Manchester's DJ Jubei, an array percussion feels from Soho musician Joel Hirsch, and the groovy guitars of Aaron Strebbs. With the sounds coming out of co -producer Charles Newman's Mother West Studios and long time Canadian mixer, producer Tom Rogers at the party also, "Giant Bug" is now complete. With it's hard grooves, textures, and undeniable melodies, the music of JC Milo will sure to take hold of the thriving electronic scene as well as grabbing the ears of alternative fans around the globe. Giant Bug album
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded ...

| | Michael Buble Call Me Irresponsible CD (2007)
Giant Bug songs
$10.09 Michael Buble ranks among the best of the contemporary crooners working in a classic pop-vocal style, and his 2007 album, CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE, further refines his suave, smooth style. With its finger-snapping big band arrangements, the album has its share of homage to Frank and Dino, both obvious cornerstones of Buble's music. But this isn't merely a retro exercise; the tunes, the production, and the overall feel are decidedly contemporary.
Stylistically adventurous versions of songs by Eric Clapton, Leonard Cohen, and Willie Nelson keep things lively, while "Everything," a Buble original, is one of the album's highlights. Still, cuts like the lead-off track ("The Best Is Yet to Come") and the old chestnut "I've Got the World on a String" will give listeners looking for some elegant, back-in-the-day pizzazz exactly that.

| | Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix CD (2009)
Giant Bug CD music
$7.99 The slyly referential MOR-pop of Phoenix has, in part, staked it's effectiveness on the reclaiming of unfashionable music styles of yore. From electro-inflected country & western ditties to airy, synth-heavy soft-rock, the group's giddy embrace of all that's considered schlock--retouching the results to a fine point with crisp, modern production and a hip, young attitude--ascended them to the status of postmodern pop auteurs par excellence. WOLFGANG AMADEUS PHOENIX, the band's fourth album, further refines their ...

In retrospect, it's hard to believe that Buffalo Springfield could not only top their debut album, but that they'd do it within a year. AGAIN clearly states the band's case as a rootsy American Beatles to rival folk-rock kings the Byrds.
Singer-songwriters Steve Stills and Neil Young were firing on all cylinders, Young moving easily from sharp-tongued acid rock ("Mr. Soul") ...
