It would be easy to dismiss John Mayer as just another pretty boy with an acoustic guitar, until you pay attention to the rich voice and equally solid batch of songs that make the in-concert ANY GIVEN THURSDAY a worthy sophomore set following ... Full Descriptionhis smash debut ROOM FOR SQUARES. Taken from a September 2002 show recorded in Birmingham, Alabama, this two-CD set finds the young heartthrob singing his way through the intermittent cries of screaming female fans. Among the rich versions of favorites like the soulful "City Love," seductive "Your Body Is A Wonderland," (complete with crowd accompaniment), and his Dave Matthews-meets-Steely Dan hit "No Such Thing."
Most impressive is the medley of "Lenny/Man On The Side," which finds guitarist Michael Chaves's instrumental intro giving way to Mayer's aching testimony peppered with plenty of the vocalist's own acoustic guitar work. Although "83," a paean to a discarded lunch box, is equally as confounding in a live setting as it is in the recorded version, Mayer makes up for it with a breathy take on The Police's "Message In a Bottle." Die-hard fans also get rewarded with DVD extras including concert footage and interview material.

At first I wondered how 15 tracks could possibly take up a 2-CD set, but upon listening to this live concert, I realized how important it was for John to release this collection from his show in Birmingham. This set really displays what raw talent he has, and shows his own style that integrates pop, rock, blues, and folk. There are little surprises all over for all types of listeners, and I would reccomend it for sure.

This was the first John Mayer album that I have purchases and I don't regret it. If you like David Gray, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson... then you will love the album too!

I must admit, I really love Mayer. He's so good. 'Try' is one of the best trio rock /pop records ever, while 'Heavier Things', well, that record's legendary. There are at least two things which make this record almost unlistenable: the non-ending screaming girls throughout, and the low production quality. I really do LOVE Mayer too, but come on girls, cut us a break!

listen to "covered in rain", the band, the awesome guitar work, the whole vibe, saw him at Jazzfest this year -you'd scream too! A wonderful, REAL talent I hope is around for a long time.
