While the quality of the music alone would be enough to recommend this album, there is something else afoot here too. The songs on VINCENT feel as if they've grown directly out of the earth's soil and are being transmitted from the 1930s over ... Full Descriptionan old Emerson radio. There is a sepia-toned quality to Ward's music that evokes screen doors and lantern-light, a vibe that somehow fits perfectly with his surrealist tendencies. From the melancholic stomp of "Sad, Sad Song" to the whirling shuffle of "Helicopter" to the achingly beautiful cover of David Bowie's "Let's Dance," there isn't a misstep here, and the whole thing adds up to a quiet little masterpiece of an album.
Every once in a while you run across a record that--though at first it seems innocuous and rather low-profile--begins, with repeated listens, to seep into your consciousness and become (slowly, steadily) part of your cellular structure. M. Ward's TRANSFIGURATION OF VINCENT is one such record. Evocative, unique, and uncommonly powerful, M. Ward is a singer/songwriter with a penchant for American roots sounds, a knack for memorable melodies, and a stunning ability to translate emotion through his vivid, detail-rich lyrics and understated delivery.
Personnel includes: M. Ward, Howe Gelb, Adam Selzer, Kate Simer.

Mojo (Publisher) (5/03, p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Interspersed with John Fahey-ish instrumentals, these delicately crafted songs are entirely bewitching....Heady and endearing stuff..." Transfiguration Of Vincent songs
$18.95 "This disk of solo piano improvisations will set your ears on an avant edge with raw musical meditations, visceral first takes that incorporate free improv, modern jazz, avant garde, aleatoric and impressionist elements." Farrell Lowe, All About Jazz"Hard to believe she made this up right on the spot--all but the two covers are first takes. This clarity of musical articulation is rarely heard in solo jazz free improv land." RC"This CD has put a real twist on my ear drums and it's refreshing, out there but still very accessible. I like the edge that it rides, especially on the cut "Inside"--sounds like Waits and Cage found a door from China that opened up inside the piano. Her cover of "Never is Now" is my favorite, it's a lingering thought, a day dream that tempts me into to some dark places." DKSAbout the CD:This CD is an intimate, quirky, visceral and often raw set of musical mediations for solo piano. Except for the covers (Garry Dial's "Never is Now" & Farrel Lowe's "Yellow Hammer", a graphic score), all cuts are free improvisations, created without sketches or any preconceptions, just Zen-inspired surrender to the muse at the moment of recording. All of these are first takes, as is the Lowe cover, which was deliberately unrehearsed. The Dial covers use the only 2 takes recorded, as bookends in the track order.About the Artist: A polymath, polyglot and multi-instrumentalist, Leslie has worked professionally since the early '70s in jazz, cabaret, opera, classical concert and avant garde venues as an improvising pianist, composer/arranger, vocal performance artist, operatic soprano and symphonic french horn player. A part of the metro-Denver scene since 1993, she resides in the Boulder area. As a pianist and composer, Leslie combines post-bop, avant garde and free jazz elements with impressionist, serialist, minimalist and aleatoric classical musical vocabulary. Amongst her formative influences were Messaien, Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Corea's early freer works, Braxton, Martial Solal, Jaki Byard, AACM and Art Ensemble. As a soprano, in addition to performances of 19th Century and later classical and opera repertoire, Leslie has been privileged to perform with and for many ...

Transfiguration Of Vincent album
$18.99 Pizmon is the co-ed Jewish a cappella group of Columbia College, Barnard College, and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Since its inception in 1986 as the first Collegiate Jewish a cappella group, Pizmon has traveled to hundreds of communities in the New York metropolitan area, across the country, and around the world, to offer Jewish music as a source of inspiration and community outreach. While Pizmon is a student-run group, our main focus is off campus, centered on Jewish communities around the world. During a typical academic year, Pizmon will perform for more than fifty audiences ranging from Jewish day schools to homes for the elderly to entire communities. We are particularly proud of our diversity, with members originating from nearly every imaginable background and Jewish denomination. History Pizmon was started in 1986 by four members of the Columbia University community who sought to bring Jewish music to homes for the elderly. Over the years we have grown to a group of fourteen and significantly expanded our audience and mission. Although the group changes every year, as old members graduate and new members arrive, the spirit and energy of the group continues to grow. Ultimately, the original spirit of the group remains, whether ...
