Recorded on May 21, 1959. Originally released on Stereophonic (13006). Includes liner notes by H. Alan Stein.
By its very nature, the slide trombone is difficult instrument to play, and it takes great technical facility to master this horn. Curtis Fuller, one of the few great jazz trombonists, earned his reputation by being able to belt out fast bebop lines almost as readily as a saxophonist, in a clean, expressive tone. Conversely, Fuller can play in a melodic and understated way too, making him a well-rounded soloist.
A testament to these skills, Fuller's 1959 release BLUES-ETTE is light on its feet. In fact, each exciting-yet-delicate song serves as a wonderful springboard for lively solos by Fuller, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, and pianist Tommy Flanagan. The jaunty "Five Spot After Dark" and the gently swinging "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere" are the highlights. In addition to offering up nimble horn and piano solos, the record is enhanced by the buoyant drumming of Al Harewood and the subtle work of bassist Jimmy Garrison. Indeed, BLUES-ETTE is fluid and graceful throughout.
The 2003 edition of BLUES-ETTE includes 2 bonus tracks.
Personnel: Curtis Fuller (trombone); Benny Golson (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Al Harewood (drums).Down Beat (3/93, p.35) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...a powerful quintet date from '59...Fuller plays with a characteristic mix of solid staccato and feather-tick tone..." | | The Great Concert of Charles Mingus CDs (1964)
Blues-Ette
$15.99 Though a different version of this 1964 Paris concert was previously available on import, THE GREAT CONCERT OF CHARLES MINGUS restores the original song order and includes previously unreleased tracks. One of these is pianist Jaki Byard's solo opener, "A.T.F.W." (the initials of Art Tatum and Fats Waller), a ragged, beautiful collage of classical, bop, and ragtime themes. Another is the full, original version of "So Long Eric (Don't Stay Over There Too Long)," which in its previously issued version was cobbled together from different performances.
The line-up includes Mingus on bass, Byard, drummer Dannie Richmond, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, and the incomparable Eric Dolphy on flute, alto sax, and bass clarinet. Mingus's sophisticated, complex compositions (which manage, somehow, to remain deeply rooted in earthy blues) are enlivened by Byard, Jordan, and Dolphy (whose nimble imagination, wit, and acrobatic skills are enough to recommend the set). "Fables of Faubus" swings, settles, and builds to a frenzy; "Sophisticated Lady," written by Mingus's idol Duke Ellington, spotlights the leader's bass chops; and the quote-filled "Parkeriana (Dedicated to a Genius)" ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Blues-Ette
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry on the Monk's thorny, uptempo bop numbers. "Evidence" and "Epistrophy," for ...

$26.29 | | Moody Blues Question of Balance CD (1970) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Germany; SACD Hybrid; United Kingdom
Blues-Ette
$17.15 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues's 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers.
There is a clear attempt to pare back the lush excesses of their earlier work in favor of a leaner rock sound, as heard on cuts like John Lodge's pell-mell "The Tortoise and the Hare." Still, one of the album's standouts is Ray Thomas's "And the Tide Rushes In," a lovely psychedelic ballad of the sort that moved the Who's Pete Townshend to remark that the Moody Blues' albums were so gorgeously produced that listening to them was like "being in church." A QUESTION OF BALANCE is a fine album, and a clear preparation for its successor EVERY GOOD ...

Blues-Ette
$12.65 This unlicensed reissue, taking advantage of the 50-year copyright limit on recordings in Europe, actually should have been called "MEMORIES/Selections from A MUSICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY," since it combines material from two albums Ethel Merman recorded in 1955. In between Broadway and Hollywood commitments, Merman recorded a rare solo LP in MEMORIES, the first ten tracks on this CD. It was a concept recording devoted to the popular music her mother might have sung to her as a child or that she might have heard before she became a stage star in the early 1930s, songs from Tin Pan Alley that were hits from the 1890s to the 1920s. A MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY collects some of the best songs ...
