Recorded on May 21, 1959. Originally released on Stereophonic (13006). Includes liner notes by H. Alan Stein.

By its very nature, the slide trombone is difficult instrument to play, and it takes great technical facility to master this horn. Curtis Fuller, one of the few great jazz trombonists, earned his reputation by being able to belt out fast bebop lines almost as readily as a saxophonist, in a clean, expressive tone. Conversely, Fuller can play in a melodic and understated way too, making him a well-rounded soloist.

A testament to these skills, Fuller's 1959 release BLUES-ETTE is light on its feet. In fact, each exciting-yet-delicate song serves as a wonderful springboard for lively solos by Fuller, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, and pianist Tommy Flanagan. The jaunty "Five Spot After Dark" and the gently swinging "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere" are the highlights. In addition to offering up nimble horn and piano solos, the record is enhanced by the buoyant drumming of Al Harewood and the subtle work of bassist Jimmy Garrison. Indeed, BLUES-ETTE is fluid and graceful throughout.

The 2003 edition of BLUES-ETTE includes 2 bonus tracks.

Personnel: Curtis Fuller (trombone); Benny Golson (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Al Harewood (drums).Down Beat (3/93, p.35) - 5 Stars - Excellent - "...a powerful quintet date from '59...Fuller plays with a characteristic mix of solid staccato and feather-tick tone..."

5 stars Cool trombone
This is a very cool, very bluesy Curtis Fuller. Together with Benny Golson, these two play an awsome session. The riffs are very catchy. You close your eyes and listen and all your cares go right out the window. It's fun, hip and oh so fine! No trombonist should be without this album, and any jazz enthusiest will definately want it too.

5 stars Melody and Rhythm Bring It Together
When the rifs echo in ones head throughout the day after to listening in the morning, causing a return to the disc makes this a winner. This recording is one of the best jazz/blues recordings I have heard in a long time. The harmonics and play between the Trombone and Sax are superb. The rhythm (drums/bass) is the glue. The tempo is right on the mark. EXCELLENT

Curtis Fuller and Benny Golson were charter members in the Jazztet of the late '50s and early '60s. The band was revived a few times by Golson and founder Art Farmer, but this 1993 edition has no trumpeter. Tommy Flanagan, Ray Drummond, and Al Harewood comprise a dynamite rhythm section that allows the front-line musicians all the freedom they need to play tandem melodies signifying the happy feeling of the original Jazztet. Golson, the consummate player and especially composer, asserts his will on most of this date, while Fuller, the leader in name, follows merrily along and plays as cleanly as he ever has. Flanagan is a definite force, quoting phrase upon phrase of jazz standards spontaneously and adding his refined, unlimited string of genius ideas whether comping or playing harmonious chords. The best-known tracks of the collection are Golson's evergreens like the Art Blakey-adopted beloved standard and easy swinging "Along Came Betty" and an updated take of the classic hard bopper "Five Spot After Dark," identified by the perfect tandem melody from ...

Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots ...

Though a different version of this 1964 Paris concert was previously available on import, THE GREAT CONCERT OF CHARLES MINGUS restores the original song order and includes previously unreleased tracks. One of these is pianist Jaki Byard's solo opener, "A.T.F.W." (the initials of Art Tatum and Fats Waller), a ragged, beautiful collage of classical, bop, and ragtime themes. Another is the full, original version ...

The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. ...

This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues's 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers. There is a clear attempt to pare back the lush excesses of their earlier work in favor of a leaner rock sound, as heard on cuts like John Lodge's pell-mell "The Tortoise and the Hare." Still, one of the album's standouts is Ray Thomas's "And the Tide Rushes In," a lovely psychedelic ballad of the sort that moved the Who's Pete Townshend to remark that the Moody Blues' albums were so gorgeously produced that listening to them was like "being in church." A QUESTION OF BALANCE is ...
