SING THE SORROW was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package. With its major label debut SING THE SORROW, AFI (aka A Fire Inside), has made the leap from being strictly hardcore punk denizens ... Full Descriptionto a more complex outfit dabbling in goth guitar textures and a soaring sound. With Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and Green Day/Rancid knob-twirler Jerry Finn manning the board, this transition ends up being a smooth one. Swirling synths, disembodied harmonies and the Tool-like bashing of drummer Adam Carson help the foreboding "Miseria Cantare" set a mood closer to Dead Can Dance than the Dead Kennedys. Although "Death of Season" predominantly rides a hardcore vibe, the most obvious indicators that this ain't your older brother's punk rock are "The Leaving Song Pt. II," with its sing-along-chorus and pounding rhythm, the dark Cult-like rocker "Bleed Black," and "This Celluloid Dream," a charged anthem of vulnerability.
Further indications that AFI successfully straddles the worlds of mainstream acceptance and street credibility are radio-friendly songs like "The Leaving Song" and "The Great Disappointment" featuring Jade Puget's melodic riffing and Davey Havok's heartfelt crooning. This Bay Area quartet seals the innovative SING THE SORROW with "Girl's Not Grey," a perfect pop-punk song that rides along on catchy, chanting harmonies and churning guitar.
Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California.
A.F.I.: Davey Havok (vocals); Jade Puget (guitar); Hunter (bass); Adam Carson (drums).

Spin (4/03, pp.101-2) - "...Retaining nu metal's most-friendly sonic whomp, the band replace the genre's pervasive despair with open-hearted punk uplift....Even this record's darkest moments sound hopeful..." Q (01/01/04, p.79) - Ranked #23 in Q's "The 50 Best Albums of 2003" - "[Incorporates] U2's dynamics and Killing Joke's apocalyptic atmospherics..." $13.05 "My whole life is a dark room" is the sentiment expressed by AFI on the appropriately titled "The Despair Factor," and there's no denying the uniformly bleak outlook of this young band. If they made music to match, this would be a rather dull ride, but they work the contrast nicely by backing their worrisome lyrics with explosion after sonic explosion ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Sing The Sorrow songs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on ...

Sing The Sorrow album
$11.39 Evanescence won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. FALLEN was nominated for Album Of The Year and for Best Rock Album. "Bring Me To Life" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock ...

| | Dimitri From Paris After The Playboy Mansion CDs (2001)
Sing The Sorrow songs
$18.59 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Dimitri From Paris.
Despite emerging from the same fertile late-'90s Paris dance scene that spawned Mirwais, Air, and Daft Punk, Turkish-born Dimitri From Paris's influence can be traced to the late-'70s heyday of house music pioneer Larry Levan. AFTER THE PLAYBOY MANSION affirms this fact, its two CDs packed with a continuous stream of remade classics and vintage nuggets remixed by a who's who of dance music producers. Even though Dimitri tagged one CD "Laidback" and the other "Uplifting," both labels are misleading as all these cuts are packed with solid grooves that grab the listener up regardless of tempo.
Among the far-flung cuts featured on "Uplifting" are De La Soul's breezy, Iberian-flavored "(It Ain't) All Good" ...

Sing The Sorrow music CDs
$13.85 Even though the ensemble often employs fractured, nervous phrases and clattering cross-rhythms, there is a great restraint to its playing. This is not the in-your-face avant-skronk many listeners associate with free jazz; instead the players work within an idiom that uses the vocabulary of free jazz for more subtle explorations. The lovely "Zen" may be the most obvious example, but Johnson, Britton, and Teuber's sensitive interplay and skillful shading can be heard even on the more aggressive tracks. NEAR EARTH is a refreshing example of the free jazz lineage, and should be of interest to listeners of many stripes.
Bassist Jeff Johnson's third solo release for Origin features his 14-year-old trio with saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Tad Britton, in a set of ...
| | Jill Sobule Underdog Victorious CD (2004) Bonus Track
Sing The Sorrow songs
$15.55 Witty, satirical, and charming, Jill Sobule brings a refreshing twist to the confessional singer/songwriter style, a fact readily apparent on 2004's UNDERDOG VICTORIOUS. In part, Sobule builds her appeal with a knack for breezy, infectious hooks, like the one on the album's first single, "Cinnamon Park," or the anthemic, sing-along chorus of the title track. Also impressive is Sobule's ear for tasteful, appealing arrangements that nod to pop history ("Cinnamon Park" is centered on the main piano riff from Chicago's "Saturday in the Park"), but always suit the song by highlighting her melodies and intimate, emotive singing.
Sobule's fine lyrics ...
