For reasons that are unclear, this LP reissue of an Impulse set drops one of the seven songs ("Black and Tan Fantasy") from the program, reducing the playing time down to a mere 29 minutes. But if one finds this LP at a budget price, it is worth picking up, for the great pianist Earl Hines is featured on three selections with many of the members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra (including on the exciting "Once Upon a Time" and "Cotton Tail"), in a quartet featuring Jimmy Hamilton and with a nonet that also includes clarinetist Pee Wee Russell along with some Ellingtonians. Great music, lousy packaging. ~ Scott Yanow

Once Upon A Time album
$9.89 Composer and arranger Gary McFarland was well-known in the 1960s for his film-scoring abilities and his charting skills with mid-sized bands. McFarland was also, however, a jazz fan, and particularly one of scalar pianist Steve Kuhn. This project features Kuhn in the center of a program made up entirely of McFarland compositions, all ...

Once Upon A Time songs
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy ...
| | Andrew Hill Passing Ships CD (1969) Remastered
Once Upon A Time album
$9.49 This larger group session was recorded for Blue Note in 1969 but had to wait until 2003 to see the light of day. It was worth the wait, since PASSING SHIPS is one of composer-pianist Andrew Hill's most varied and distinctive efforts. Actually, the group here isn't all that big when you check the lineup, but Hill's skillful writing makes it sound as if we're listening to a more spacious ensemble. In addition, he makes most effective use of reedman Joe Farrell's multi-instrumental talents here. Not only ...

During the cold war, collaborations between U.S. and Russian musicians were infrequent. Yet, in a rare act of solidarity, the Paul Winter Consort and the The Dimitri Pokrovsky Singers came together to create a compelling set of music. Each song on EARTHBEAT combines American jazz with Russian folk music. And along the way, other styles of music, such as Latin, seep into the mix too.
More than anything, this is celebratory music. With the exception of "The Lake," this album is far from introspective. In fact, it explodes with energy and vigor on almost every track. ...
