When he's not offering a lightly phrased delivery of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," the dashing vocalist is taking a delicate trip through the Gershwins' "How Long Has This Been Going On." Somewhere, Frank Sinatra is smiling as this ... Full DescriptionOhio native also takes a winning crack at numbers closely associated with the Chairman's oeuvre, including "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," the title cut, and "I Should Care." Aided by the laid-back accompaniment of his accomplished sidemen, Scaggs sets the kind of mood you'll find in a dark, cozy cocktail lounge right around last call, complete with the hint of lingering smoke and clinking glasses.
In keeping with the cool, sophisticated image he's cultivated going back to his SILK DEGREES days back in the '70s, Boz Scaggs takes a whack at the great American songbook with BUT BEAUTIFUL, STANDARDS: VOLUME 1. Showing young bucks like Michael Cincotti and Michael Buble a trick or two, Scaggs takes up with pianist/arranger Paul Nagle and company for time well spent with some of the greatest composers of standards.
Personnel includes: Boz Scaggs (vocals); Eric Crystal (saxophone); Paul Nagel (piano).
Rolling Stone (5/29/03, p.60) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Small-jazz-group versions of some of the most romantic music ever....Scaggs makes some of the best R&B he has recorded since 1976's SILK DEGREES..." Mojo (Publisher) (9/03, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A vocal album of considerable warmth....A record that could give smooth jazz a good name..." Hide Description But Beautiful: Standards Vol. 1 Music Boz Scaggs But Beautiful: Standards Vol. 1 Songs But Beautiful: Standards Vol. 1 Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Surprising stretch for a great Balladeer The song "What's New" caught my attention when I heard it on the radio, with a very hip and stylish rhythm to it, and I was caught off guard to find that Boz was the vocalist, so I had to get this album! He has written and/or performed some of my favorite ballads.
Very nice overall, the arrangements were more ordinary than I expected, but he definitely pulled it off, in spite of being hampered by a budget 'jazz' band. They're sufficient to comp behind a singer, but as their solos show, not inspiring. Submitted by volpebob2 (St. Louis, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
No Surprise at all An artist who understands music like Boz Scaggs performing a great selection of standards, how could this album miss?!
And this one comes across as truly genuine; not just some hack milking the old tunes because their career has nowhere else to go. Much like Harry Nilsson's legendary 'As time goes by' this is a beautiful heartwarming effort. Submitted by faus8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
this jazz fan was amazed I heard a story on NPR with cuts from this CD. I couldn't imagine who it was -- I was shocked to find it was Boz Scaggs. THAT Boz Scaggs! His voice, phrasing, and taste are up there with the best to ever sing standards, and the small group providing background is just right -- no need for an overblown orchestra or big band. The result is far more intimate. This CD could not have been better, and I look forward to Volume 2! Submitted by Nick (Gainesville, FL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jazz Album of the Year If this is not the album of the year then it is certainly the best jazz album of the year.
I have seen some mediocre reviews of this album and they have obviously been written by yahoos who have not bothered to listen to the album in it's entirety.
If this is volume 1 then I wish Boz would hurry up and release volume 2.
If you enjoy good acoustic jazz then this is the album for you.
I was totally taken by surprise as I would never have thought that I would own an album by Boz Scaggs.
If you don't already own a copy I would suggest that you go and buy one forthwith.
It's magnificent. Submitted by a reviewer (Arizona,Usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

But Beautiful: Standards Vol. 1 album
$16.05 THE WIND won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was nominated for Song Of The Year and for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Disorder in the House" won for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
With the specter of a terminal lung cancer diagnosis hanging over his head, Warren Zevon responded by rallying to make THE WIND, an album that found him working with longtime collaborator and friend Jorge Calderon, shortly after getting the news. The result is a tight group of 11 songs wrapped up in a year, despite a diagnosis that only gave Zevon three months to live. Along the way, plenty of famous names--both friends and fans--pitched in, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam and Don Henley. Allusions to his situation are naturally sprinkled throughout, whether it's partying in the face of doom ("The Rest of the Night"), using a self-penned blues song to look back with no regrets ("Rub Me Raw"), or pledging his eternal love ("El Amor De Mi Vida"). Even Zevon's cover ...
| | Diana Krall Girl In The Other Room CD (2004) Enhanced CD
But Beautiful: Standards Vol. 1 CD music
$15.65 It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest departure to date; THE GIRL IN THE OTHER ROOM is almost entirely devoid of the jazz standards that constituted her previous repertoire, and it contains her first recorded batch of original songs. It's possible that new husband Elvis Costello, who co-wrote all six of those tunes with his wife, was the agent provocateur. It's also feasible that Costello, who has previously recorded Mose Allison material and palled around with Tom Waits, nudged Krall toward such choice selections as Allison's bluesy plaint "Stop This World" and Waits's cocktail rhumba "Temptation." Nevertheless, Krall delivers them--like ...
