Boz Scaggs - But Beautiful CD

 Surprising stretch for a great Balladeer
The song "What's New" caught my attention when I heard it on the radio, with a very hip and stylish rhythm to it, and I was caught off guard to find that Boz was the vocalist, so I had to get this album! He has written and/or performed some of my favorite ballads. Very nice overall, the arrangements were more ordinary than I expected, but he definitely pulled it off, in spite of being hampered by a budget 'jazz' band. They're sufficient to comp behind a singer, but as their solos show, not inspiring.

 No Surprise at all
An artist who understands music like Boz Scaggs performing a great selection of standards, how could this album miss?! And this one comes across as truly genuine; not just some hack milking the old tunes because their career has nowhere else to go. Much like Harry Nilsson's legendary 'As time goes by' this is a beautiful heartwarming effort.

 this jazz fan was amazed
I heard a story on NPR with cuts from this CD. I couldn't imagine who it was -- I was shocked to find it was Boz Scaggs. THAT Boz Scaggs! His voice, phrasing, and taste are up there with the best to ever sing standards, and the small group providing background is just right -- no need for an overblown orchestra or big band. The result is far more intimate. This CD could not have been better, and I look forward to Volume 2!

 Jazz Album of the Year
If this is not the album of the year then it is certainly the best jazz album of the year. I have seen some mediocre reviews of this album and they have obviously been written by yahoos who have not bothered to listen to the album in it's entirety. If this is volume 1 then I wish Boz would hurry up and release volume 2. If you enjoy good acoustic jazz then this is the album for you. I was totally taken by surprise as I would never have thought that I would own an album by Boz Scaggs. If you don't already own a copy I would suggest that you go and buy one forthwith. It's magnificent.
