In keeping with the cool, sophisticated image he's cultivated going back to his SILK DEGREES days back in the '70s, Boz Scaggs takes a whack at the great American songbook with BUT BEAUTIFUL, STANDARDS: VOLUME 1. Showing young bucks like Michael Cincotti and Michael Buble a trick or two, Scaggs takes up with pianist/arranger Paul Nagle and company for time well spent with some of the greatest composers of standards.
When he's not offering a lightly phrased delivery of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," the dashing vocalist is taking a delicate trip through the Gershwins' "How Long Has This Been Going On." Somewhere, Frank Sinatra is smiling as this Ohio native also takes a winning crack at numbers closely associated with the Chairman's oeuvre, including "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," the title cut, and "I Should Care." Aided by the laid-back accompaniment of his accomplished sidemen, Scaggs sets the kind of mood you'll find in a dark, cozy cocktail lounge right around last call, complete with the hint of lingering smoke and clinking glasses.

The song "What's New" caught my attention when I heard it on the radio, with a very hip and stylish rhythm to it, and I was caught off guard to find that Boz was the vocalist, so I had to get this album! He has written and/or performed some of my favorite ballads.
Very nice overall, the arrangements were more ordinary than I expected, but he definitely pulled it off, in spite of being hampered by a budget 'jazz' band. They're sufficient to comp behind a singer, but as their solos show, not inspiring.

 No Surprise at all
An artist who understands music like Boz Scaggs performing a great selection of standards, how could this album miss?!
And this one comes across as truly genuine; not just some hack milking the old tunes because their career has nowhere else to go. Much like Harry Nilsson's legendary 'As time goes by' this is a beautiful heartwarming effort.

this jazz fan was amazed
I heard a story on NPR with cuts from this CD. I couldn't imagine who it was -- I was shocked to find it was Boz Scaggs. THAT Boz Scaggs! His voice, phrasing, and taste are up there with the best to ever sing standards, and the small group providing background is just right -- no need for an overblown orchestra or big band. The result is far more intimate. This CD could not have been better, and I look forward to Volume 2!

If this is not the album of the year then it is certainly the best jazz album of the year.
I have seen some mediocre reviews of this album and they have obviously been written by yahoos who have not bothered to listen to the album in it's entirety.
If this is volume 1 then I wish Boz would hurry up and release volume 2.
If you enjoy good acoustic jazz then this is the album for you.
I was totally taken by surprise as I would never have thought that I would own an album by Boz Scaggs.
If you don't already own a copy I would suggest that you go and buy one forthwith.
It's magnificent.

This Japanese edition of Sturm's REVERENCE features two additional songs: "Parles Moi De Toi" and "Melody."
Richard Bona was born in a little village in West Africa. His mother was a singer and his grandfather was both a singer and musician. Those talents were passed down naturally. By the time Bona was of school age, he spent plenty of hours performing at church. At home, his hunger for the world of music found him making his own flutes, drums, and even a decent guitar. As a teenager he moved to a large city where he soon found a way to get his fill of jazz and the chance to play real instruments and learn to read and write music. On this 2001 album, Reverence, his second full-length recording, all of those years of surrounding himself with music shine through. Even though the lyrics aren't in English, fans from the United States seem to enjoy the album. Bona's songs on Reverence are jazz, but done in a world style, with the flavor of his homeland proudly holding a large spot.
