Shesus' debut album, Loves You...Loves You Not, is one of those releases that calls for a variety of adjectives -- and those adjectives range from melodic and poppy to dissonant, abrasive, and discordant. The mostly female alternative pop/rock outfit is coming from a punky power pop aesthetic; that's the thing they have in common with '80s new wavers like the Go-Go's, the B-52's, and Blondie as well as '90s artists such as Letters to Cleo, Eve's Plum, Bif Naked, and Elastica. But Shesus is far from a carbon of those artists, even though some of them are among the Dayton, OH, band's influences. Shesus, for all their girlish and melodic poppiness, are also noisy and abrasive -- they're as poppy as the Go-Go's or No Doubt (who, arguably, picked up where Blondie left off), but they also share Lydia Lunch's and Courtney Love's appreciation of discordance. It should be noted that when the Go-Go's started out in 1978, they were a lot more raggedy than the band they had evolved into by the time they recorded their first album, Beauty and the Beat, in 1981 -- so Shesus has something in common with very early, pre-IRS Records Go-Go's as well as the smoother, more polished band they became. Much to Shesus' credit, they pull off the poppy/discordant contrast impressively well; it's a combination that makes for infectious listening on tracks like "B-Side Radio," "Confrontation," and "The More You Laugh." From original material to an inspired remake of David Bowie's "Hang on to Yourself," Loves You...Loves You Not is a very promising debut. ~ Alex Henderson

Loves You...Loves You Not album
$9.59 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix ...

Loves You...Loves You Not songs
$10.25 The 2010 issue of Mississippi Blues by Sonny Landreth on the Fuel 2000 imprint is not a new album, nor is it a representative compilation of his oeuvre. In fact, the set is a complete repackage of the album entitled The Crazy Cajun Recordings originally issued on CD by Great Britain's Edsel in 1999. The material dates from 1973 and 1977, recorded with the famed Huey P. Meaux (aka the Crazy Cajun) when he wasn't touring with Clifton Chenier as part of his Red Hot Louisiana Band. These 20 tracks range from Landreth's Lafayette, LA-styled ...

Loves You...Loves You Not album
$6.75 Alan Parsons delivered a detailed blueprint for his Project on their 1975 debut, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, but it was on its 1977 follow-up, I Robot, that the outfit reached its true potential. Borrowing not just its title but concept from Isaac Asimov's classic sci-fi Robot trilogy, this album explores many of the philosophies regarding artificial intelligence -- will it overtake man, what does it mean to be man, what responsibilities do mechanical beings have to their creators, and so on and so forth -- with enough knotty intelligence to make it a seminal text of late-'70s geeks, and while it is also true that appreciating I Robot does require a love of either sci-fi or art rock, it is also true that sci-fi art rock never came any better than this. Compare it to Jeff ...

| | John Blount Better Days Ahead CD (2007)
Loves You...Loves You Not songs
$12.65 Better Days Ahead teams together the outstanding high-note trumpeter John Blount with drummer Dave Tucker and the New Big Band. Actually Blount also plays well in the lower registers but it is difficult to overlook his virtuosity which is very much in evidence on "Firedance" and on many of the other pieces. The orchestra is excellent, with first-class musicianship, rewarding solos particularly by guitarist Rich Roeder and pianist Harry Appleman, and fresh arrangements. ...
