Shesus' debut album, Loves You...Loves You Not, is one of those releases that calls for a variety of adjectives -- and those adjectives range from melodic and poppy to dissonant, abrasive, and discordant. The mostly female alternative pop/rock outfit is coming from a punky power pop aesthetic; that's the thing they have in common with '80s new wavers like the Go-Go's, the B-52's, and Blondie as well as '90s artists such as Letters to Cleo, Eve's Plum, Bif Naked, and Elastica. But Shesus is far from a carbon of those artists, even though some of them are among the Dayton, OH, band's influences. Shesus, for all their girlish and melodic poppiness, are also noisy and abrasive -- they're as poppy as the Go-Go's or No Doubt (who, arguably, picked up where Blondie left off), but they also share Lydia Lunch's and Courtney Love's appreciation of discordance. It should be noted that when the Go-Go's started out in 1978, they were a lot more raggedy than the band they had evolved into by the time they recorded their first album, Beauty and the Beat, in 1981 -- so Shesus has something in common with very early, pre-IRS Records Go-Go's as well as the smoother, more polished band they became. Much to Shesus' credit, they pull off the poppy/discordant contrast impressively well; it's a combination that makes for infectious listening on tracks like "B-Side Radio," "Confrontation," and "The More You Laugh." From original material to an inspired remake of David Bowie's "Hang on to Yourself," Loves You...Loves You Not is a very promising debut. ~ Alex Henderson

Loves You...Loves You Not songs
$15.65 With its titanic guitar solos, symphonic suites, and multi-layered melodies, Muse's fifth album operates under the assumption that bigger is better. This is the very definition of a super-sized album, an album that takes its cues from Queen, its lyrics from science fiction novels, and its delivery from rock opera. It's also the first time that Muse has truly sounded like Muse, as few bands since Queen have so readily explored the intersection of bombast and extravagance. THE RESISTANCE is most certainly extravagant -- there are snatches of classical piano entwined throughout, not ...

Loves You...Loves You Not album
$15.25 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed ...

Loves You...Loves You Not music CDs
$13.25 Better Days Ahead teams together the outstanding high-note trumpeter John Blount with drummer Dave Tucker and the New Big Band. Actually Blount also plays well in the lower registers but it is difficult to overlook his virtuosity which is very much in evidence on "Firedance" and on many of the other pieces. The orchestra is excellent, with first-class musicianship, rewarding solos particularly by guitarist Rich Roeder and pianist Harry Appleman, ...
