1949-1952 album
$12.78 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not completely "inside," it is far more so than most have a right to expect. For newcomers to Zorn's music, this may not sound typical of his dozens of other records, but it is a ...

| | Nelly Sweatsuit CD (2005)
1949-1952 music CDs
$13.39 SWEATSUIT brings together on one album all of the hits from Nelly's dual releases SWEAT and SUIT, both of which went multi-platinum. Cherry-picking the hits from both albums, SWEATSUIT includes the Neptunes-produced infidelity anthem "Play It Off," "Over and Over" with Tim McGraw," and the funky, mid-tempo "Playa," featuring Mobb Deep and Missy Elliott. This "recent greatest hits" set nicely represents Nelly's sultry, sing-songy pop-rap, with its debt to both classic R&B and contemporary hip-hop. Three new tracks, including the single "Grillz" (with guest spots by Paul Wall and Ali), are added bonuses.

| | Mandragore Chants Des Tavernes: Rebetiko CD (2007) (Import) France
1949-1952 music CDs
$9.95 The Greek musical genre rebetiko became popular in the bars and hashish dens in the slums of port cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Roughly analogous to the blues, it speaks of and to the disenfranchised poor, frequently including songs about hashish and opium smoking. Though it lacks some of the form's earthiness, this expertly performed and sung collection from the Greek folk revival band Mandragore ...
