Legendary Songs of Don McLean is basically EMI's repackaging of the 1991 Best of Don McLean with double the tracks. It is a welcome expansion to the collection and serves as a better-defined cross section of McLean's abilities. His beautiful reading of the Hank Williams classic "Your Cheatin' Heart" and the sweet lullaby "Wonderful Baby" sit alongside the flagship "American Pie" and other classics like "Vincent" and "Castles in the Air," quite nicely showcasing what a versatile musician Don McLean really is. The only point where this collection really drags is with a pair of tunes recorded in the early '90s, "Headroom" and "Have You Seen Me," where the production is over the top and too showy to let the songs actually shine. Luckily, these two songs come near the end of the collection, but make the closing cuts -- the unreleased "Just to Hold My Hand" and "Empty Chairs" -- feel lost at sea. Putting these two tracks on the collection was a poor decision on the part of the compilation producers, but the rest of the contents more than make up for this blunder by positioning the lesser-known gems next to the classics in McLean's illustrious career. ~ Gregory McIntosh

A Must Have Collection - for old and new fans Don McLean is far more than just the guy who wrote the Madonna hit American Pie - he has been America's premier singer/songwriter for over 3 decades . His songs have been recorded by the biggest stars in music - diverse as Elvis,Julio and George Michael. More importantly McLean has recorded consistantly for the past 3 decades . This package showcases a collection of songs from the entire period - and is undoubtedly the best hits package ever offered. McLean can be seen from many angles - hes rocking on Have you Seen Me , seducing on Crying and just having fun on Just to Hold your Hand (released for the first time). This CD will thrill both old and new fans - its wonderful value and features some excellent previously unseen photos. The good news is it marks a new relationship between McLean and Capitol which promises some more material over the next 12 months. A Great Introduction To The Music Of Don McLean This is the one to get. You want the hits. You want the sound to be stellar. You'd like to get an idea of what else McLean has up his sleeve besides "American Pie". You'd like something to play in the car without any swearing or questionable content. This is the one to get. Other hits are; Vincent (Starry Starry Night), Crying (the Roy Orbison tune), Castles In The Air and And I Love You So (Perry Como recorded this). You'd like to play your kids or grandkids an example of "good music". This is the one to get. Submitted by MooreD1 (Ypsilanti, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
