$11.64 Bradford Cox was a virtual song machine during the time between Deerhunter's CRYPTOGRAMS and the Atlas Sound's LOGOS, churning out officially released material as well as plenty of songs only available on his blog. Over that span of time, he became a finer and more fluid songwriter, and his music emerged from the experimental fog of his earlier work just enough to give listeners tantalizing glimpses of almost ridiculously catchy songs. LOGOS keeps this push-pull between challenging and charming, yet Cox's second solo album still feels more experimental than ...

| | Bags Sharpen Your Sticks CD (2005)
Mod Revival Generation
$7.50 The Boston Phoenix says:"Along with Bullet LaVolta, the Bags are the band most often credited (or blamed, in some circles) for introducing punk metal to Boston. Which means that they don’t have to worry too much about their sound having gone out of style since they last rocked. In fact, to a large extent, the new CD picks up where 1991’s Night of the Corn People left off. There is a key difference, though: the CD of Corn People had 13 songs and ran 69 minutes. (Granted, one of those songs was "Waiting for Maloney," the first and only lengthy rock opera about commuting from Allston to rehearse.) The new disc serves up 15 songs in 36 minutes: the sound is still metallic, but the songs are all punchy and punky. Meanwhile, the lyrics from Wood and Hardy amount to a puncturing of metal’s ponderous tendencies. Imagine the post-therapy self-loathing of Metallica’s St. Anger played for laughs and you’d have the Bags’ "Believer" or "Ass Kicker" ("You’re gonna kick my ass, that I do know — Kung Foe"). So forget about this being just a respectable comeback and call it the Bags’ best album. Period." -Brett Milano "Cavemen Rejoice" - from Sharpen Your Sticks - is featured in the hit PlayStation 2 video game Guitar Hero.Jon Hardy, Jim Janota, and Crispin Wood formed The Bags in the summer of 1985. They unleashed their unique blend of hard rock and punk on the Boston club scene in September of that year.In 1987 they recorded and released their debut album Rock Starve. Charles M. Young wrote about Rock Starve in Playboy (March, 1988): "The Bags (from Boston) fall somewhere among the Ramones, Husker Du, and early Kiss. Their debut, Rock Starve (Restless), consists of thrilling guitar-bash riffs that pound like the sound of a herd of giant ...

$11.49 Tennessee's own Janie Akin has done it again, this time with a bluegrass gospel flair! Following on the heels of 2005's well-received "Travelin' Woman" comes Bound for Glory.Once again enlisting the formidable production skills of Grammy-winning soundman Jim Gaines, and joining forces with singer/songwriter Sandy Carroll's Bessie Blues Band, she has released a wonderful and spirited celebration of acoustic mountain gospel music, flavored with just a hint of blues and soul. With Bound for Glory, she may have actually invented a new musical genre, "Blues-Grass"!Janie says, "Making this music was so much ...
| | Palmer Utterback Sing High CD (2007)
Mod Revival Generation
$15.19 Sing HighThe song "High Sierra" is dedicated to my old friend Jeff Miller. I made the photograph on the front cover of this CD in 1972. It's a photo of Jeff bravely peering over a high cliff near Upper Yosemite Falls. Between 1970 and 1973 we took several backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At the time I was reading the book, The Mountains of California, written by John Muir. There was a line in the book where he says something like, “Come and climb the mountains to get their good tidings!” Whenever Jeff and I came upon a spectacular view of a mountain, lake, chasm or cliff, we would say, “Good tidings! Good tidings!” John Muir often referred to the Sierra Nevada as the "Range of Light." This is because he saw the snowy mountain-chain, " bathing in its glorious floods of light." Jeff and I saw this sight too and when I sing the line, "Sierra Nevada is the Range of Light," I remember how heart warming it was to share these moments with Jeff. On one of our trips we camped by a lake above the timberline. The wind was absolutely still. The lake's mirror like surface reflected the stars perfectly. The shiny ribbon of the Milky Way glowed on the still water. We picked up flat circular stones and skipped them on the lake. We said, “Hey check it out, we’re skipping stones on the Milky Way.” I was keeping a journal and before going to sleep that night I wrote the line, "Skipping stones on the Milky Way," I also pressed a few wildflowers that I had collected that day between the pages of my journal. A few months after ...
