BONITO was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Album By a Duo or Group with Vocal.
Jarabe de Palo's debut on Warner Bros. is simply -- and optimistically -- titled Bonito (Lovely). Pau Donés, the band's leader and singer, is someone who tends to be among the "politically correct" people and he's fully loaded with good intentions. He knows that the world is going wrong (especially for the Latin American people who seem to be the target audience), but instead of doing protest songs he tries to sing positive tunes, the ones that show the sunny side of the street. "If everything is going wrong, don't worry, dance and everything will be alright" seems to be the message on this album and "Bailar" and "Bonito" are clear proof of that. And although there's nothing wrong at being hopeful, it all sounds a bit naďve and soft. There are also other topics, like in "Las cruces de Tijuana," a kind of corrido that pays tribute to Tijuana's white crosses while regretting that Spanish border cities do not exhibited memories of their own. It's not a bad album, but you won't really hear anything that you haven't heard in any of the band's previous releases. ~ Iván Adaime

Bonito songs
$10.09 LO QUE TE CONTE MIENTRAS TE HACIAS LA DORMIDA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
Although at first listen La Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that had brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended to Be Asleep) merits closer attention. Beyond some similarities to their earlier work -- nostalgic lyrics, ridiculously catchy choruses, and lead singer Amaia Montero's seemingly fragile delivery -- this album displays far greater emotional and musical range than do their earlier efforts. Montero and keyboard player Xabi San Martín continue to write most of the music, and guitar player Pablo Benegas most of the lyrics, but there are some notable exceptions, like album opener and first single "Puedes Contar Conmigo" (You Can Count on Me), written entirely by Montero. Here she abandons any former posturing as a helpless little girl and sings not about a fairy tale, but about love that's flawed and recognizable; when the final chorus ...

| | Owls CD (2001)
Bonito songs
$11.65 Owls contains the four original members of hardcore/emo pioneers Cap'n Jazz, but don't expect the fragile but intense music of the early days. Likewise, the music is pretty far removed from the computer savvy and audience unfriendly work that singer Tim Kinsella pioneered with his work in Joan of Arc. The record is actually a collection of eight decidedly more rock & roll songs, though there is still plenty of off-kilter thought behind the results. Kinsella's instantly recognizable voice plays it pretty smooth for his fairly straightforward but still a little off-key vocal performances. Guitarist Victor Villarreal, on the other hand, steals the show with his noodling guitar arpeggios and original sonic presence. Open-minded fans of the member's previous bands will certainly see the similarities that still do exist, but those turned off by the past might have to open their hearts to this group on the strength of this debut. | | Stooges Extended Play CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Bonito album
$9.13 So just how much tape rolled while the Stooges were in England cutting Raw Power? No one knows for sure, but it seems like every couple of years somebody digs up more outtakes and/or rehearsal tapes from James Williamson's tenure with the band, and sure enough the U.K. Easy Action label has issued this two-disc EP set featuring still more unreleased late-period Stooges stuff. This flyer for the label's upcoming Heavy Liquid box set, however, at least unearths some quality material for a change. The first disc offers up an alternate take of "Hard to Beat," a scratchy rehearsal tape of "Head On" (though it's a bit less grimy sounding than most of the Williamson archive material that circulates), and a new dub-wise mix of "I Got a Right." So far, nothing all that special, but it's the second disc where things get really interesting. Disc two features four songs remixed in 5.1 Surround format on DVD, and while many rock dogs will tell you 5.1 is just a new way to sell us the quad system we didn't want back in the 1970s, the audio quality of the material is pretty impressive, especially the two alternate takes of "I Got a Right" and a frantic tear through "Gimme Some Skin." For a change, these recordings appear to be first generation (or pretty close) and recorded in an actual studio, ...

| | Jethro Tull - Extended Versions CD (2006)
Bonito album
$5.95 As with all of the releases in the Extended Versions series, the 2006 Jethro Tull edition is a set of latter-day live renditions of some of the group's best-known classics -- which have all been previously released. And as with most Tull releases after, say, 1980, the performances and production here are exceedingly clean-sounding -- in other words, the bite of their classic early-'70s period is nowhere to be found. What you get instead are pretty blah versions of such classics as "Aqualung," "Locomotive Breath," and "Living in the Past." But it's always a gas to hear such lesser-known Tull tunes as "Fat Man" and "Nothing Is Easy," both of which are included here, while a truncated version of "Thick as a Brick" (which still clocks in at over nine minutes) is a rare point where the group truly sounds inspired. For a true collection of classic/definitive Tull, 1985's Original Masters or 2001's Very Best of Jethro Tull will do much better. ~ Greg Prato
